Emkay Global Issues 'Buy' Rating on Unlisted NSE Shares

Emkay Global has initiated coverage on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) with a price target of ₹2,050. The brokerage cites India's rising financial market participation as a key growth driver, though investors should note that the exchange currently trades in the unlisted market.

Brokerage firm Emkay Global has started tracking the National Stock Exchange (NSE) with a 'Buy' rating and a price target of ₹2,050. This development highlights the interest in the exchange's shares, which are currently traded in the unlisted secondary market rather than through a public listing on an exchange.

The report from Emkay Global points to the ongoing financialization of the Indian economy as the primary driver for its positive view. As an increasing number of households shift savings into equities and mutual funds, the exchange is well-positioned to benefit from higher transaction volumes. The brokerage projects an annual growth rate of 13% in earnings per share for the NSE between fiscal years 2027 and 2029.

While the growth outlook for the exchange is positive, investors must be aware of the regulatory landscape. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has recently implemented stricter norms for derivatives trading, particularly in the Futures and Options (F&O) segment, aimed at curbing excessive speculation. Because a significant portion of the NSE’s revenue depends on trading volumes in these segments, any regulatory change that slows down F&O activity can impact the exchange's income. This remains a material risk that impacts the entire exchange sector.

From a market context, it is useful to compare the NSE with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which is the only publicly listed stock exchange in India. Unlike the NSE, the BSE’s financial performance and share price are available for daily tracking by all public investors. Valuations for exchange businesses globally are highly sensitive to market volatility, trading volume growth, and the regulatory environment regarding transaction fees.

The final benefit for investors will depend on how the NSE manages the balance between volume growth and evolving regulatory requirements. The most important areas to track moving forward will be the impact of SEBI's new norms on total trading volumes and whether the exchange can maintain its dominant market share in the face of these regulatory pressures.
