Emkay Global Financial has shared an updated assessment of Pine Labs, projecting strong growth in its payments business. While revenue across IAP and DITP divisions is rising, the company faces higher operational expenses due to platform expansion and marketing. Analysts are tracking how these investments impact future margins.
Emkay Global Financial recently released an updated assessment of Pine Labs, highlighting consistent growth across its primary payment business segments. The brokerage report emphasizes that the company’s focus on expanding its UPI platform and digital payment services remains a significant driver of revenue, despite an evolving operational landscape.
Segment Performance and Margins
The company’s revenue growth is being fueled by strong performance in its IAP division, which recorded a 30.9% year-on-year increase, and the DITP segment, which grew by 20.8%. Alongside this top-line growth, Pine Labs improved its contribution margins by 54 basis points to reach 72.8%, indicating improved efficiency in its core transaction processing business.
However, the company is managing rising operational overheads. Indirect costs climbed to Rs 4.3 billion in the recent period, up from Rs 4.0 billion in the previous quarter. Management has attributed this increase to ongoing investments in scaling the platform and aggressive marketing campaigns aimed at capturing a larger market share in the competitive fintech sector. Analysts note that while these costs are currently elevated, they are tied to the firm's strategy of long-term expansion.
UPI Strategy and Future Targets
A central component of the company's growth strategy is its UPI platform, which currently handles a monthly Gross Transaction Value (GTV) of approximately Rs 200 billion. The company has set an ambitious target to increase this monthly GTV to between Rs 330 billion and Rs 340 billion by the end of fiscal year 2028. Data provided in the report suggests that 65% of these transactions are currently valued above the Rs 2,000 threshold, which can be an indicator of higher-value usage patterns on the platform.
Emkay Global has recalibrated its financial model to account for the impact of UPI Merchant Discount Rate integration and higher capital spending on the company’s financials. While the firm adjusted its EBITDA projections upward for fiscal years 2028 and 2029, it also factored in the higher cost structure when setting its outlook. For investors following the fintech space, the key monitorable will be the company’s ability to balance these high marketing and platform-scaling costs with stable profitability. The success of the planned UPI growth targets, alongside the company’s ability to control its indirect expenses, will likely be a primary focus for analysts in the coming quarters.
