Emkay Global Cuts Tata Motors Target Price to Rs 550

Emkay Global has lowered its target price for Tata Motors to Rs 550, citing rising raw material costs and margin pressures. The brokerage reduced its earnings estimates for the upcoming years, noting that macroeconomic challenges may affect growth momentum despite steady demand in the commercial vehicle segment.

Emkay Global Financial has revised its target price for Tata Motors to Rs 550 from Rs 700, reflecting a more cautious stance on the company’s near-term profitability. While the automaker maintains its volume growth, the brokerage highlighted persistent challenges from rising commodity prices that have put pressure on operating profit margins.

During the second quarter, Tata Motors saw a significant 540-basis-point impact on its margins due to higher raw material costs. Although the company’s commercial vehicle division successfully maintained an operating profit margin of 11.4% through cost-cutting measures and strategic price hikes throughout the year, the path ahead remains difficult. Emkay Global anticipates further margin pressure, estimating an additional hit of 150 to 200 basis points in the third quarter as material costs continue to weigh on the company.

In response to these headwinds, the brokerage has reduced its earnings per share projections for the next three fiscal years by 6% to 11%. Additionally, the valuation multiple applied to the standalone business was lowered to 12x from 14x. This adjustment indicates a belief that the period of high-growth momentum following major tax reforms has peaked, with the company now facing broader macroeconomic risks such as volatile fuel prices and rising interest rates.

Despite the downgrade, Tata Motors’ management continues to report a positive outlook for near-term demand. The company projects high-single to low-double digit growth for the third quarter, supported by steady freight activity and festive season inventory build-up. To offset the impact of input costs, the company has implemented a 1% price increase effective from October.

For investors, the key monitorable will be the company’s ability to manage costs and maintain its operating margins in a tough macro environment. Whether the planned price hikes successfully protect profitability without hurting demand will be a crucial factor for the stock’s performance in the coming quarters.
