Emkay Global Cuts Godrej Consumer Target to ₹1,100

Brokerage firm Emkay Global has lowered its target price for Godrej Consumer Products to ₹1,100 from ₹1,250. While the company reported 19% revenue growth, profit margins came under pressure due to rising input costs. Investors are keeping a close watch on the company’s ability to manage raw material expenses and its ongoing leadership transition in the Indian business.

Brokerage firm Emkay Global has revised its target price for Godrej Consumer Products to ₹1,100, down from the previous ₹1,250. This adjustment follows the company’s recent quarterly performance, where profit numbers did not meet expectations despite a strong rise in sales.

Margin Pressure vs. Revenue Growth

In the second quarter, Godrej Consumer reported a healthy 19% growth in consolidated revenue, with volume growth reaching 8%. Despite these top-line gains, the company’s bottom-line performance trailed behind analyst projections. The core issue impacting profitability was a 300 basis point contraction in gross margins compared to the same period last year. In simple terms, for every 100 rupees of sales, the profit retained was lower because the cost of raw materials increased. These higher input costs are expected to remain a challenge in the near term, leading analysts to lower earnings estimates for the 2027-2029 period by 3% to 6%.

Segment Performance and Strategic Outlook

The company's performance varied significantly across its different businesses. The home care segment remains a strong driver of growth for the business. However, the personal care segment has struggled to perform as well. On the positive side, international markets, particularly in Indonesia and the GAUM region, have shown resilience and continued to perform well, often exceeding internal growth targets.

Investors are also monitoring the leadership transition in the Indian operations, specifically the search for and appointment of a new CEO. Changes at the top often bring uncertainty, and the market will look for stability and strategic continuity during this period. Beyond leadership, the company faces broader macroeconomic uncertainties, including persistent inflation, which could continue to affect consumer spending and the prices the company pays for raw materials.

While the target price has been lowered, the brokerage maintains a positive view on the company’s long-term business trajectory. The company continues to project double-digit growth in both revenue and operating profit by the 2027 fiscal year. Achieving these targets will depend heavily on the company's ability to navigate high raw material costs and drive recovery in the personal care segment. The key monitorable for shareholders will be the company’s margin management in the coming quarters and the successful transition in leadership.
