Dolat Capital Targets 25% Upside for Sugar Stocks Amid Price Rally

Dolat Capital projects a 25% potential upside for Triveni Engineering and Balrampur Chini Mills amid rising sugar prices. However, investors should be aware that government efforts to control inflation, including new stockholding limits effective September 1, 2026, could limit how much these price gains translate into higher profits.

Dolat Capital has released a bullish report on the Indian sugar sector, forecasting up to 25% upside for major producers like Triveni Engineering and Industries Ltd. and Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd. The brokerage set a target price of ₹360 for Triveni Engineering and ₹817 for Balrampur Chini Mills. This outlook comes at a time when domestic sugar prices have climbed sharply due to tight supply conditions.

Factors Driving Price Increases

The current price rally in the sugar sector is largely driven by production concerns. Heavy rainfall and irregular weather patterns in key regions like Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have affected crop yields, leading to lower-than-expected output. When this supply crunch is combined with steady demand during the ongoing festive season, it creates a scenario where sugar prices have moved to higher levels. The brokerage notes that this improved demand-supply balance is expected to help companies achieve better realization rates, which essentially means they are selling their sugar at higher prices than before.

Government Intervention and Investor Risks

While rising prices often signal better profitability, the sugar sector operates under strict government oversight to keep food inflation in check. Investors must consider that the Indian government is actively monitoring the situation. A critical development is the new directive enforcing a 15-day stockholding limit for bulk consumers, which will become effective on September 1, 2026. This measure is designed to prevent hoarding and manage market prices.

Furthermore, the government has the power to intervene through import duty waivers if domestic prices climb too quickly. This regulatory pressure acts as a ceiling, meaning that even if market prices rise, the actual benefit to company profit margins may be limited by government policy. The industry also faces uncertainty regarding future ethanol blending policies and sugarcane pricing, which are significant factors in how much profit a sugar mill can ultimately retain.

What Investors Should Monitor

For those tracking these stocks, the next few months will be important. Investors may want to watch how the new stockholding limits affect the physical movement of sugar in the market and whether these rules put a brake on the price rally. Additionally, updates on the upcoming crushing season's output estimates and any further policy changes from the government regarding exports or imports will be key indicators of whether the projected 25% upside is achievable. The sustainability of higher profit margins will depend heavily on the balance between market-driven pricing and government-led inflation controls.
