DCB Bank Profit Jumps 29% in Latest Quarter

DCB Bank reported a 29% year-over-year increase in profit to ₹2.36 billion, beating market estimates. Following the results, Motilal Oswal maintained a positive outlook with a target price of ₹245. While operational performance was strong, investors are closely watching the 10 basis point dip in net interest margins amid rising deposit costs across the banking sector.

DCB Bank delivered a strong performance in its latest quarterly results, with profit after tax rising 29% year-over-year to ₹2.36 billion. This growth surpassed market estimates by approximately 7%. The bank’s core interest-earning business also expanded, with net interest income growing 17% compared to the previous year, reaching ₹7.0 billion, which aligned with analyst projections.

While the headline profit numbers were robust, the bank faced pressure on its net interest margin, which fell 10 basis points to 3.25%. The management attributed this decline primarily to the costs associated with mobilizing FCNR(B) deposits, a type of foreign currency non-resident account. This margin compression is a trend seen across many Indian banks, as lenders face intense competition to secure stable deposits, leading to higher interest expenses.

To counter the impact of compressed margins, DCB Bank leveraged its non-interest income streams. This category of earnings climbed 34% year-over-year to ₹2.5 billion. The growth was driven by an 11% sequential increase in core fee income and healthy gains from treasury operations. Overall, the bank’s operating profit before provisions rose 26% year-over-year to ₹3.8 billion, demonstrating that the underlying business activity remains productive despite the interest rate environment.

Following the earnings release, Motilal Oswal Financial Services reiterated its positive stance on the stock. The brokerage has assigned a target price of ₹245, derived from its valuation outlook for the 2028 fiscal year. The brokerage's analysis suggests that the bank’s ability to maintain momentum in fee income is a key factor in navigating the current deposit-related challenges. Projections from the firm estimate a return on assets of 1.02% and a return on equity of 14.8% by fiscal year 2027.

For investors, the key factor to track going forward is the bank’s ability to manage its cost of funds. The banking sector as a whole is navigating a high-interest-rate environment where attracting deposits requires paying higher rates, which can naturally squeeze margins. Future updates will be important to monitor, specifically regarding the bank's ability to protect its interest margins while maintaining asset quality and loan growth. Management commentary on the sustainability of fee income will also be a vital signal for the company's profitability in the coming quarters.
