Cyient DLM Revenue Jumps 27% in Q2, Focus Shifts to Margins

Cyient DLM reported a 27% revenue increase to ₹3.9 billion in the second quarter, fueled by strong growth in aerospace and medical technology. However, profit margins dipped to 8.7% due to rising product development expenses. Investors are now watching how the company balances these upfront costs while scaling its higher-value operations and managing a record ₹28.1 billion order book.

Cyient DLM reported a 27% rise in revenue to ₹3.9 billion for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year. This growth was driven by a 61% jump in the aerospace segment and a 2.5 times increase in the medical technology division. While the company's order book remains healthy at ₹28.1 billion, representing a 23% increase compared to last year, the core focus for investors has turned toward profit margins.

Operating profit margins, which indicate how much profit the company makes from its core business operations, tightened to 8.7% this quarter. This was a drop of 130 basis points. The primary reason for this pressure is the spending on product development and the initial costs of setting up infrastructure for new programs. The company is actively shifting its business mix toward 'box-build' operations, which involves assembling complete electronic systems rather than just manufacturing individual parts. Revenue from these higher-value box-build services rose to 37% of the total, up from 25% in the same period last year.

Strategic Shift and Future Outlook

Management has indicated that while upfront spending on these growth initiatives will likely keep margins in the 9-10% range for the current fiscal year, they expect the benefits of this expansion to reflect in the financial statements starting in fiscal year 2028. The company is looking to move margins into double digits as these investments begin to pay off. A key element of their long-term growth plan includes four major electronic product programs, with a combined potential value of approximately USD 1 billion to be executed over the next seven to nine years.

Investor Monitorables and Risks

For investors, the immediate challenge is to track whether the company can successfully execute these high-value projects without further pressure on costs. The electronics manufacturing services (EMS) sector in India is highly competitive, and keeping margins stable while scaling operations is a common industry challenge. If demand from key clients slows down or if the costs of developing new programs stay higher for longer, it could continue to put pressure on profitability. The upcoming quarterly results will be important to monitor, specifically to see if the management's target of improving margins to double digits remains on track.
