CreditAccess Grameen reported a profit of Rs 5 billion for the second quarter of fiscal 2027, supported by a 19.5% growth in its loan portfolio. The company improved its profit margins but flagged localized loan repayment stress in parts of Maharashtra due to drought conditions. Investors are tracking the company’s plan to reduce lending rates while managing borrowing costs.
CreditAccess Grameen has reported a profit after tax of Rs 5 billion for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year. This performance highlights the company's ability to maintain growth in its microfinance business, with assets under management rising by 19.5% compared to the same period last year. A key shift in the company’s business model is its move toward a more diverse loan mix, with retail finance loans now making up 23% of its total portfolio.
Profitability and Margin Trends
The company’s operational efficiency was reflected in its net interest margin, which is the difference between the interest it earns on loans and the interest it pays to borrow money. This margin climbed to 15.1% in the second quarter, marking a 70 basis point increase from the previous quarter. Due to this improvement, management has updated its margin guidance for the full year to a range of 14.4% to 14.7%. The company plans to pass on some of these gains to customers by reducing its own lending rates by 50 basis points in both the third and fourth quarters of the fiscal year.
Regional Risks and Asset Quality
While the overall financial performance remained positive, the company identified a potential risk area. Leadership noted that drought conditions in certain regions of Maharashtra in October 2026 have led to requests from customers for loan restructuring and extensions on repayments. The management described this stress as localized, indicating that it has not spread to other regions. Currently, the company’s asset quality remains stable, with the percentage of gross loans that are not being paid back on time—known as gross non-performing assets—standing at 1.8%.
Future Monitorables for Investors
Looking ahead, the company expects its borrowing costs to stabilize between 9.2% and 9.3% by March 2027. The ability of the company to manage this cost of borrowing will be an important factor in maintaining its profit margins. Following the quarterly results, the brokerage firm Emkay Global maintained a positive outlook on the stock, citing the margin improvement and asset growth, and set a price target of Rs 1,500. Investors will be closely watching the developments in the drought-affected regions of Maharashtra to see if the repayment stress remains contained or if it begins to impact the broader portfolio quality in the coming quarters.
