Cohance Lifesciences Downgraded by ICICI Securities to 'Reduce'; Target Cut to Rs 365

ICICI Securities has downgraded Cohance Lifesciences to 'Reduce' after the company reported a net loss of Rs 24.1 crore in Q1 FY27. The brokerage lowered its target price to Rs 365, citing weak performance in the CDMO segment and mounting losses at the NJ Bio subsidiary.

Cohance Lifesciences shares faced volatility on August 6, 2026, following a brokerage downgrade from ICICI Securities. The analyst firm lowered its rating on the stock to 'Reduce' and reduced the target price to Rs 365 from Rs 415, reflecting concerns over the company's recent financial performance and operational hurdles.

The downgrade comes after a disappointing first quarter for fiscal year 2027. Cohance Lifesciences reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 24.1 crore, with EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) plummeting by 99% compared to previous expectations. The brokerage noted that the Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) segment struggled with the unpredictable nature of order shipments, which caused revenue volatility.

Operational Challenges and Subsidiary Losses

A key factor in the brokerage's cautious stance is the high cost base within the CDMO business, which has compressed profit margins. Additionally, the company's subsidiary, NJ Bio, has reported mounting operational losses, adding further pressure to the consolidated financials. Investors have been monitoring these subsidiary losses closely, as they have been a drag on the company's overall profitability.

Despite the immediate challenges, the company management remains optimistic about a turnaround. They have indicated that the second quarter of FY27 should see sequential improvement, with a stronger recovery in growth and EBITDA margins expected in the second half of the fiscal year. This recovery plan relies on a steady inflow of commercial orders for CDMO projects, efficient execution of the order book, and new business contributions from NJ Bio.

Investor Monitorables

Beyond the current quarterly results, investors are tracking specific operational and regulatory risks. The company has faced recent regulatory scrutiny, including USFDA 483 observations at its Hyderabad facility, which can impact project timelines and compliance costs. The brokerage has also highlighted the inherent risk associated with the lumpy nature of orders in the CDMO sector, where revenue recognition can fluctuate significantly from one quarter to another.

For the coming quarters, the key monitorables will be the company's ability to normalize its cost structure, the speed at which NJ Bio can reach operational efficiency, and the successful resolution of regulatory observations. The market will also look for sustained execution of the order book to confirm that the recovery projected for the second half of the year is on track.
