City Union Bank Outperforms Q2 Estimates on Strong NII

City Union Bank reported better-than-expected core profit in its latest quarter, driven by higher net interest income and fee growth. The bank managed expenses through a strategic asset sale and has lowered its buffer for potential bad loans. Investors may track whether the bank can maintain this pace while focusing on its core gold loan and MSME lending strategy.

City Union Bank reported a strong operational performance in the recent quarter, with core profit after tax beating market estimates by 3.7%. This growth was primarily supported by solid net interest income and an increase in fee-based revenue. To manage the impact of elevated operating costs, the bank completed a strategic sale of assets to an asset reconstruction company, which brought in Rs 1.07 billion. This liquidity allowed the bank to set aside a contingent buffer of Rs 0.5 billion to protect its balance sheet against future uncertainties.

A key positive update for the bank is the revision in its outlook for potential bad loans. Due to an improvement in the quality of its loan portfolio, the bank has reduced its guidance for expected credit loss provisions from the previous range of 60-65 basis points down to 40-45 basis points. This move indicates that the management is more confident about the health of its current book of loans.

Looking ahead, the management has maintained a growth outlook aimed at outpacing the overall industry loan growth by 2% to 3%. Analysts expect the bank to target a compound annual growth rate of 17% in its loan book through the 2026-2028 period. The bank’s strategy relies heavily on refining its portfolio mix, with a target allocation of 31-32% in gold loans, 55-60% in MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) loans, and 10% in secured retail products.

While the operational performance appears steady, investors often monitor risks associated with such focused portfolios. City Union Bank has a heavy concentration in the MSME and gold loan sectors, both of which can be sensitive to economic cycles and regional demand changes. Furthermore, the bank faces intense competition from larger private lenders that are increasingly aggressive in the gold and MSME segments. The bank’s ability to grow its loan book while keeping these specific credit risks in check remains a crucial factor for long-term health.

The market will closely observe the bank's next few quarters to see if it can successfully execute its portfolio shift and maintain healthy asset quality. The key monitorables for the bank include the actual pace of loan growth, the stability of its net interest margins, and its success in managing credit costs without needing further large provisions.
