Choice Equities Sets ₹1,480 Target for United Breweries on Premium Push

Choice Institutional Equities has initiated a 'Buy' rating on United Breweries with a target of ₹1,480. The brokerage highlights the company's focus on premium beer products as a key growth driver. Investors should balance this outlook against recent profit challenges and high industry excise duties that impact margins.

Choice Institutional Equities has initiated coverage on United Breweries Limited (UBL) with a 'Buy' rating and a price target of ₹1,480 per share. This update follows the company’s Capital Markets Day held on September 3, 2026, where the leadership team outlined its strategic roadmap to focus on higher-value products.

The central theme of the company’s strategy is premiumization. While the overall beer market in India grows at a steady pace, United Breweries is seeing its premium segment expand by 20-25% annually. This shift is intentional because premium brands generally offer better profit margins than standard economy offerings. To support this goal, the company has invested ₹110 crore in a new, high-speed canning line at its Ellora Brewery in Maharashtra. This expansion is designed to improve production capacity and efficiency to meet the growing demand for its premium portfolio.

Despite the positive outlook from the brokerage regarding future earnings, the company’s recent financial performance reveals the challenges present in the current market environment. In the first quarter of FY27, United Breweries reported a consolidated revenue of ₹5,919.44 crore, which was a 10% increase compared to the previous year. However, the net profit for the same period declined by 9.64% to ₹166.28 crore. This difference between rising sales and falling profits indicates that while demand is present, the company is dealing with pressure on its bottom line.

Investors may note that the Indian beer industry faces significant structural headwinds. Excise duties are a major factor, accounting for approximately 65% of the final retail price of beer. This high tax burden limits the company's flexibility in pricing. Additionally, United Breweries must manage volatility in raw material prices and packaging costs, such as aluminum and glass, which are susceptible to inflationary pressures and geopolitical supply chain risks.

The company currently holds a market share of roughly 50%. The key for investors to track in the coming quarters will be how effectively management can navigate the high-tax environment and rising input costs while trying to grow the premium segment. Success will depend on the company’s ability to protect its margins while maintaining its dominant market position.
