Motilal Oswal has maintained a 'Buy' rating for Canara HSBC Life Insurance with a target price of INR 180. The brokerage cited the insurer's steady 2QFY27 performance, marked by 11% growth in new business premiums and improved profit margins on new policies.
Motilal Oswal has reiterated its 'Buy' rating on Canara HSBC Life Insurance, keeping the target price at INR 180. The brokerage’s outlook follows the company's recent second-quarter financial results for fiscal year 2027, where the insurer reported resilient growth despite a complex regulatory environment.
During the quarter, the company saw its Annual Premium Equivalent—a key industry metric that calculates the value of new premiums sold—rise by 11% compared to the previous year, reaching INR 6.6 billion. A closely watched figure in the insurance sector is the Value of New Business (VNB) margin, which indicates the profit generated from new policies. For this quarter, the insurer achieved a VNB margin of 21.4%, improving from 19.7% in the same period last year. Profit after tax also grew by 5% year-on-year to reach INR 431 million.
Since its public market debut in October 2025, the company has focused on balancing growth with operational efficiency. Analysts at Motilal Oswal suggest that the insurer is currently well-positioned to handle ongoing industry discussions regarding expense management and commission structures. The brokerage noted that the company’s existing model currently aligns with the directions discussed in recent regulatory consultation papers, which may provide some comfort to investors concerned about potential policy changes.
However, the insurance sector continues to face significant regulatory oversight. Investors should be aware that the final frameworks regarding expense caps and commission structures are still pending. Other monitorable factors include the potential impact of credit life insurance regulations, the drag caused by Goods and Services Tax (GST) implications, and the long-term sustainability of the company's current product mix.
Looking ahead, the market will likely watch for further clarity from the insurance regulator regarding these structural changes. While the solvency ratio remains stable, supported by subordinated debt, the company's ability to maintain its growth trajectory while navigating these regulatory shifts remains a key point to track for shareholders.
