Birla Corp Keeps 'Buy' From Choice Equities With Rs 1,125 Target

Choice Institutional Equities has maintained its 'Buy' rating on Birla Corporation with a target price of Rs 1,125 per share. The decision comes after a challenging second quarter where net profit fell 59% due to rising fuel expenses and weak cement prices. Investors are now closely watching how the company manages cost pressures through its captive coal and renewable energy initiatives.

Choice Institutional Equities has reiterated its 'Buy' rating on Birla Corporation, establishing a target price of Rs 1,125 per share. This stance comes as the company navigates a difficult period marked by significant profit contraction and ongoing cost pressures in the cement sector.

Q2 Performance and Margin Pressures

Birla Corporation’s recent financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027 highlighted the challenges currently facing the business. The company reported a consolidated net profit of approximately Rs 37 crore, representing a sharp decline of nearly 59% compared to the same period last year. While revenue showed a steady increase of about 9%, reaching approximately Rs 2,415 crore, the bottom line was severely impacted by weak cement prices and the rising costs of essential inputs like clinker and fuel.

Analysts have specifically pointed to fuel expenses as a major headwind for the company. The management has projected that fuel costs will likely see a sequential increase of about Rs 100 per ton in the third quarter of fiscal year 2027. This continuous pressure from higher petcoke and coal prices has compressed profit margins, making it difficult for the company to maintain profitability at historical levels.

Strategic Initiatives to Counter Costs

Despite the near-term difficulties, the brokerage remains constructive on Birla Corporation’s medium-term outlook. The company is actively focusing on several strategic initiatives to protect its margins and improve efficiency. A key part of this strategy includes relying more on captive coal production, such as the Bikram mine, to reduce dependence on expensive market-purchased fuel. Additionally, the company is increasing its focus on renewable energy and moving toward higher-value, premium cement products to improve its realization per ton.

In a recent move to manage its capital requirements, the company’s board also approved the issuance of Non-Convertible Debentures (NCDs) worth up to Rs 250 crore on a private placement basis. This funding may support the company as it continues to balance expansion plans with current liquidity needs.

Risks and Investor Monitorables

The ability of Birla Corporation to recover depends heavily on the demand environment in Central India, which is a core market for the company. While a small hike in cement prices—ranging between Rs 5 to Rs 7 per bag—has provided some relief, the sustainability of these price increases remains uncertain. The primary risks for investors to track include persistent inflation in fuel prices, which could further squeeze margins, and potential execution delays in scaling up captive coal production. The company’s success in navigating these supply-side pressures while managing its expansion projects will be the most important factors for market participants to watch in the coming quarters.
