BSE Shares in Focus: Brokerage Sets Rs 4,850 Target After Q1 Surge

Prabhudas Lilladher has maintained a 'Buy' rating on BSE Ltd with a target price of Rs 4,850. The exchange reported strong Q1 FY2027 results with a 66% rise in net profit, supported by high trading volumes. However, investors should monitor the impact of rising technology infrastructure costs and new regulatory changes on future profit margins.

BSE Ltd is in the spotlight after brokerage firm Prabhudas Lilladher retained its 'Buy' recommendation, setting a target price of Rs 4,850. This outlook follows the company's Q1 FY2027 financial performance, which saw a consolidated net profit of approximately Rs 873 crore, marking a year-on-year increase of roughly 66%.

The exchange's revenue growth, which surged by about 63%, was driven by heightened trading activity across the cash and derivatives segments, along with continued growth on the Star MF platform. This volume-led expansion has been a significant contributor to the company’s recent earnings.

Despite the strong topline performance, the exchange faces rising operating expenses. BSE is currently investing heavily in its technology infrastructure to handle higher traffic and data processing needs. These increased costs, along with rising clearing and settlement expenses, are expected to put some pressure on EBITDA margins in the coming quarters. The brokerage has factored these ongoing technology investments into its estimates for the fiscal year.

Investors should also consider the potential impact of regulatory changes. Updates to the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) and new guidelines surrounding proprietary trading are important factors that could influence future revenue streams. These policy shifts introduce a layer of uncertainty, as the exchange adjusts to the changing regulatory environment.

On the positive side, BSE maintains a strong financial foundation with a zero-debt status. This provides the company with significant financial flexibility compared to businesses that rely on heavy borrowing. The stock is currently trading at a valuation of approximately 54 times earnings, which reflects investor expectations for continued growth.

Looking ahead, the next important updates for shareholders will be the management’s commentary on technology-related capital spending and how the exchange sustains trading volumes amidst shifting market regulations. The ability to manage these operational costs while maintaining volume growth will be a critical factor for the company's long-term profitability.
