BSE Shares Jump 6.5% After 45% Surge in Q2 Profit

BSE Limited shares rose 6.5% on Thursday as the exchange reported a 45% increase in net profit for the second quarter. Strong revenue growth and improved operating margins fueled the rally, though analysts remain divided on whether this momentum will continue given regulatory challenges.

BSE Limited shares rose 6.5% in Thursday’s trade, reaching an intraday high of ₹3,842. This upward movement followed the release of financial results for the second quarter ended September 30, 2026, which showed healthy growth across the exchange's core operations.

The exchange operator reported a consolidated net profit of ₹807.52 crore, a 45% increase compared to the same period last year. Revenue grew by 34% to ₹1,432.66 crore, largely supported by higher trading activity in the equity and derivatives segments. Operational performance also improved, with EBITDA rising 42.4% to ₹984 crore. This pushed profit margins to approximately 68-69%, reflecting better cost management and increased scale during the quarter.

Analyst Views on Growth Sustainability

Despite the positive earnings, market opinion remains split regarding the future path for the stock. Some brokerages, such as Motilal Oswal, have maintained a 'Buy' rating with a target price of ₹4,200. These analysts point to the recovery in trading volumes as a primary driver, suggesting that the company is well-positioned to benefit from sustained interest in the stock market.

Conversely, other analysts are taking a more cautious approach. Bernstein has retained an 'Underperform' rating, setting a target of ₹3,180. The firm highlighted concerns that the introduction of new clearing and settlement charges could weigh on long-term volume growth. There is also an ongoing debate among market observers about whether the current high profit margins can be sustained if competitive pressure within the exchange sector increases.

For investors, the primary monitorable will be the consistency of trading volumes and any further developments related to regulatory changes. While the stock has posted significant gains year-to-date, shareholders will likely watch for management commentary on how the company plans to navigate potential regulatory pressures on clearing fees and maintain its competitive position against other market participants. The sustainability of this performance in the coming quarters will be a key factor in how the market evaluates the stock's valuation.
