BSE May Replace Wipro in Nifty 50 in September Rebalance

Nuvama Research predicts BSE Ltd. will enter the Nifty 50 index in September 2026, replacing Wipro. This potential shift could bring $741 million in passive inflows to BSE, while Wipro faces expected outflows of $246 million. The final decision rests with the index provider, with an official announcement expected later this month.

BSE Ltd. shares experienced positive movement on August 10, following a report from Nuvama Alternative & Quantitative Research that projected the exchange operator’s inclusion in the Nifty 50 index. The research firm anticipates that BSE will replace Wipro during the semi-annual rebalancing process scheduled for September 2026.

Why the Change Is Predicted

The prediction is based on BSE’s recent transition into the Nifty 100 index and its substantial free-float market capitalization—the value of shares readily available for public trading. According to Nuvama, BSE now meets the criteria necessary for entry into the benchmark index. In contrast, Wipro has faced pressure due to broader challenges in the information technology sector, including slower spending from banking and financial clients and disruptions related to artificial intelligence.

When a company enters the Nifty 50, index-tracking funds—which invest money specifically to mimic the performance of the index—are required to buy shares of the new entrant. Nuvama estimates this shift could trigger roughly $741 million in passive inflows for BSE. Conversely, as Wipro would be removed from the list, funds tracking the index would likely sell their holdings, potentially leading to outflows of approximately $246 million for the IT major.

Risks and Monitoring

While the report provides a clear outlook, it is important to note that these are projections. The final decision lies with the NSE Indices Committee. The analysts highlighted that changes in the index rebalancing methodology or unexpected shifts in free-float factors could alter the outcome. Because the cut-off date for eligibility calculations—July 31, 2026—has already passed, the market is now waiting for the official announcement, which is typically expected in the second half of August.

Investors tracking this development should monitor the official exchange communication from NSE Indices later this month. For Wipro, shareholders may watch for signs of recovery in the IT sector, while for BSE, the focus remains on the confirmation of its index inclusion and the subsequent impact on trading volumes once the changes become effective on September 30, 2026.
