Axis Direct CEO Advises Phased Equity Investing as Nifty Trades Below Averages

Axis Direct CEO Pranav Haridasan recommends a disciplined, phased investment approach amid the ongoing market consolidation. With the Nifty trading at approximately 17x forward earnings, the firm highlights that domestic institutional flows are providing a buffer against global volatility. Investors are shifting toward goal-based portfolios as they move away from the high-risk derivatives segment.

Pranav Haridasan, CEO of Axis Securities (Axis Direct), has advised Indian investors to adopt a disciplined, phased approach to equity markets as the index navigates a period of consolidation. This recommendation comes as the Nifty index trades at approximately 17 times its one-year forward earnings, a valuation level that sits below the long-period historical average of 18.4 times. The firm suggests that this provides a more attractive entry point for long-term investors, though the path to a sustainable market rally depends on corporate earnings growth rather than temporary triggers.

The Indian equity market has spent significant time in 2026 in a base-building phase. Rather than anticipating an immediate, sharp rebound, the current market environment rewards those who remain invested through staggered, systematic entries. A key pillar of this stability has been the resilience of domestic institutional flows. Even during periods of foreign investor selling, record-high inflows through Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) and active participation by domestic institutions have provided a significant cushion, helping Indian markets remain decoupled from extreme global volatility.

A notable shift is also occurring in how retail investors engage with the stock market. With data indicating that a high proportion of individual traders in the futures and options segment have faced financial losses, many are pivoting away from self-directed speculation. Investors are increasingly moving toward professional advisory services and model portfolios that align with specific financial goals. This transition away from active derivative trading toward long-term wealth creation is becoming a defining trend in the current fiscal year.

Despite the potential for growth, the outlook is not without challenges. Investors remain cautious regarding several structural and macro-economic factors. Private capital expenditure remains slow to pick up, and shifting hiring requirements in the services sector, influenced by technological advancements, are being monitored. Additionally, persistent pressures from crude oil prices and the potential for volatility in global yields remain risks that could weigh on sentiment and corporate margins.

The next important monitorable for the market will be the trend in corporate earnings. For the index to move beyond the current consolidation range, investors may look for broader margin expansion across sectors, which would suggest that companies are successfully managing input cost pressures. As the market continues to evolve, the focus remains on businesses with durable earnings and strong fundamentals rather than speculative opportunities.
