Angel One Outlook: MTF Growth and New Ventures in Focus

Brokerage ICICI Securities has updated its view on Angel One, highlighting the firm's Margin Trading Facility (MTF) growth and steady margins. The company projects long-term profit expansion, though investors should watch for competitive pressures in the discount broking sector.

Angel One is prioritizing its Margin Trading Facility (MTF) to drive revenue stability, as noted in a recent assessment by ICICI Securities. While the company reported a 9.6% sequential decline in total trading orders for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, the MTF book showed resilience, growing by 21.4% quarter-on-quarter and 40.4% year-on-year.

Financial Strategy and Cost Control

The brokerage anticipates the firm will sustain EBITDA margins near 45% by focusing on operational efficiency. A key part of this strategy is the containment of overheads; the company has guided for flat employee expenses throughout the current fiscal year. This approach helps the firm balance its core broking business while managing the costs of newer ventures. Angel One has stated it is limiting the losses from these new initiatives to between 2.5% and 3% of its operating margin to ensure discipline.

Diversification and Market Context

Beyond traditional broking, Angel One is diversifying into wealth and asset management. Its wealth management division has surpassed Rs 160 billion in assets under management (AUM). Additionally, the asset management unit has reached a base of 259,000 folios with an AUM of Rs 5.7 billion. For investors, these segments represent an attempt to build revenue streams that are less dependent on daily stock market volatility.

However, the discount broking industry remains highly competitive, with several digital-first players vying for market share. A significant factor for investors to monitor is the regulatory environment. Changes in SEBI guidelines regarding derivative trading, risk management, or client acquisition norms can directly impact the business models of discount brokers. Because the company’s revenue is closely tied to overall market volumes, any sustained downturn in trading activity can influence financial performance.

The long-term outlook for the company will depend on its ability to maintain its margin profile while scaling these new business segments. Investors tracking the stock should pay attention to quarterly trends in active client acquisition, the sustainability of MTF growth against changing interest rate environments, and the speed at which the wealth and asset management verticals reach profitability.
