Anand Rathi Upgrades KPIT Tech to Buy, Target Rs 701

Brokerage firm Anand Rathi has upgraded KPIT Technologies to a 'Buy' rating, setting a target price of Rs 701. The outlook relies on strong deal wins and a shift toward product-led growth, helping the company navigate a slowdown in European automotive demand. Investors should note that while the company is diversifying its client base, it still faces challenges from the cyclical nature of the global automotive sector.

Anand Rathi has upgraded KPIT Technologies to a 'Buy' rating, projecting an upside potential for the stock with a price target of Rs 701. The brokerage attributes this positive outlook to the company’s strategic pivot toward a product-led business model and ongoing efforts to reduce its reliance on specific large automotive clients. This shift is expected to support a forecasted profit growth of over 25% annually through fiscal years 2027 to 2029.

Balancing Regional Performance

The company’s recent performance highlights a mixed environment for the automotive industry. The passenger car segment, particularly in Europe, has faced difficulties, resulting in a 15.2% contraction in European operations and a 4.1% revenue dip in the passenger car division. However, this weakness has been partially offset by strong performance elsewhere. The Commercial Vehicles division, which includes trucks and off-highway equipment, grew by 17.6% sequentially. Furthermore, the company reported strong growth in the U.S. and the SIMA region, which helped cushion the impact of the European slowdown.

Strategic Wins and Future Outlook

Management has maintained a positive outlook, with expectations for improved performance in the second half of the year compared to the first. A key driver for this optimism is $213 million in new engagement wins, which provides a level of visibility for long-term revenue. The company is also working to increase the mix of fixed-price contracts and is deploying AI-driven operational tools to improve profit margins. From a valuation perspective, the stock is trading at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 19.9x for FY28 and 16.7x for FY29. While this valuation suggests the market is pricing in future growth, the company's ability to maintain these margins will be a key metric for investors.

Risks for Investors

While the brokerage sees a path to recovery, investors should be aware of the company's dependency on large client accounts. The report indicates that two significant accounts are currently weighing down overall performance, and while these are expected to reach a bottom in the coming quarters, they remain a point of potential volatility. Additionally, the company operates in the software engineering space for automotive manufacturers, a sector that is inherently cyclical and sensitive to global economic conditions. The key monitorable for shareholders will be the pace at which the company executes its $213 million order book and whether it can successfully protect its profit margins amidst shifting global demand in the passenger vehicle segment.
