Alkem Labs Gets 'Buy' From Elara With ₹6,533 Target Price

Brokerage firm Elara has initiated coverage on Alkem Laboratories with a 'Buy' rating and a target price of ₹6,533. While the firm's pivot toward chronic therapies and biologics offers long-term potential, investors should note that Q1 FY27 profits declined by 21.7% due to higher tax expenses and margin pressure.

Alkem Laboratories has received a 'Buy' initiation from brokerage firm Elara, which has set a price target of ₹6,533 for the shares. This assessment follows the company’s strategic effort to pivot its business model, moving away from its traditional reliance on seasonal acute therapies—such as medications for fever or infections—and toward more consistent chronic care segments like diabetes, cardiac, and central nervous system treatments.

Financial Performance and Margin Pressure

While the brokerage sees value in the long-term strategy, the company’s recent financial performance reveals some pressure points for investors to consider. For the quarter ending June 30, 2026, Alkem reported a 10.9% year-on-year increase in revenue, reaching ₹3,740 crore. Despite this growth in sales, net profit declined by 21.7% to ₹520 crore, largely due to higher tax expenses. Furthermore, the company’s operating profit margin, or EBITDA margin, narrowed to 20.5% from 21.9% in the same quarter of the previous year.

The brokerage's optimistic outlook is driven by the potential of emerging business units like Enzene BioSciences, which operates in the biologics manufacturing space, and the planned acquisition of Swiss-based medical device maker Occlutech. These assets are viewed as future growth engines. However, investors should be aware that these units are currently in a phase where they require significant spending, which weighs on the company's immediate profitability rather than contributing to it.

Growth Strategy and Key Risks

Alkem is also targeting the high-demand diabetes segment with the launch of semaglutide in India. This shift aims to reduce earnings volatility, which has historically been a challenge for companies with a heavy focus on acute-care products. Additionally, the company maintains a strong net cash position of approximately ₹57.64 billion as of June 30, 2026, which provides some financial flexibility.

Investors may want to monitor several key factors moving forward. The primary risk involves the company's ability to maintain and improve profit margins while managing the costs of its new growth ventures. Execution risk is also significant, as the company needs to scale its new biologics and medical device operations successfully. Furthermore, regulatory compliance remains a critical aspect of the pharmaceutical industry, and any developments regarding inspections at domestic or U.S. manufacturing facilities could impact sentiment. As of September 1, 2026, the stock has been trading in the range of ₹5,299 to ₹5,318, and the market will likely focus on whether the company can translate its new portfolio strategy into bottom-line recovery in the coming quarters.
