Aditya Birla Capital Reports 40% Profit Rise in Q1 FY27

Aditya Birla Capital posted a 40% jump in profit after tax to INR 11.8 billion for the first quarter of fiscal 2027. The strong performance was driven by growth in its lending book, mutual fund assets, and insurance premiums. The company recently strengthened its balance sheet by raising INR 40 billion in growth capital to support future expansion.

Aditya Birla Capital Limited announced strong financial results for the first quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, reflecting broad-based growth across its lending, asset management, and insurance business lines. The company reported a consolidated profit after tax of INR 11.8 billion, a 40% increase compared to the same period last year. Consolidated revenue also showed a healthy trend, growing 29% year-on-year to reach approximately INR 147 billion.

Segment Performance and Growth Drivers

The company’s lending operations, which include its non-banking finance and housing finance divisions, remain a significant part of its portfolio. This segment saw its loan book expand to INR 2.19 trillion, marking a 32% growth compared to the previous year. Simultaneously, the company's asset management business benefited from rising market participation, with total Assets Under Management across mutual funds and insurance businesses reaching INR 7.53 trillion, a 36% increase over the last year.

The mutual fund segment, a key contributor to fee-based income, reported a quarterly average asset base of INR 4.28 trillion. In the insurance space, the company saw strong demand, with health insurance gross written premiums rising 50% year-on-year to INR 22 billion, and life insurance individual first-year premiums growing by 20% to INR 9.52 billion.

Capital Allocation and Strategic Focus

To support its ongoing expansion, Aditya Birla Capital recently finalized a capital raise of INR 40 billion. This equity capital, obtained through a preferential allotment involving promoters and the International Finance Corporation, is intended to provide the necessary liquidity to fund business growth and investment in digital infrastructure. This capital infusion is particularly important for the company's 'One ABC' strategy, which focuses on cross-selling financial products to its existing customer base to improve efficiency and reduce customer acquisition costs.

Investor Monitorables and Risks

While the company is currently seeing high growth rates in its lending book and AUM, investors should monitor the sustainability of these margins as competition in the non-banking finance and asset management sectors remains intense. The performance of the lending portfolio will largely depend on the quality of assets and the company's ability to manage credit costs in a changing interest rate environment. Furthermore, the company’s ability to successfully execute its digital-first strategy and cross-selling targets will be critical to achieving its projected return on equity targets for fiscal year 2028. Future updates on asset quality, margin trends in the insurance business, and the deployment efficiency of the recently raised capital will be the primary areas to track.
