State Bank of India, India's largest lender, has released its quarterly financial results, revealing a performance that surpassed market expectations on most fronts. The bank's Net Interest Income (NII), which represents its core operational earnings from lending, grew by 3% year-on-year to ₹42,985 crore, exceeding the CNBC-TV18 poll estimate of ₹40,766 crore.
Net profit for the quarter saw a substantial increase of 10% compared to the same period last year, reaching ₹20,160 crore. This figure comfortably beat the street's anticipation of ₹17,048 crore.
A significant contributor to this improved profitability was the inclusion of one-time gains. SBI realized ₹4,593.22 crore from its stake sale in Yes Bank and an additional ₹25.46 crore from its stake in Jio Payments Bank, bolstering the quarter's bottom line.
Asset quality remained robust. Gross Non-Performing Assets (NPA) reduced to 1.73% from 1.83% in the previous quarter (June), and Net NPA improved to 0.42% from 0.47%. In absolute terms, Gross NPA decreased to ₹76,243 crore from ₹78,039.7 crore, and Net NPA fell to ₹18,460 crore from ₹19,908 crore.
Furthermore, the bank reported better slippages (new bad loans) at ₹4,754 crore for the September quarter, down from ₹7,945 crore in June. Recoveries and upgrades also showed positive movement.
Impact This strong performance is expected to positively influence investor sentiment towards SBI and potentially the broader banking sector. The solid earnings and stable asset quality reinforce the bank's financial health and operational efficiency. This news can lead to a positive outlook on banking stocks, especially for large-cap public sector banks. Rating: 8/10
