State Bank of India (SBI) shares touched a new all-time high of ₹958.80 on the BSE, marking a 1% increase during Tuesday's intraday trading, even as the broader market, represented by the BSE Sensex, experienced a decline of 0.50%. This positive movement in SBI's stock price is attributed to its recently announced financial results for the July to September quarter of FY2025-26 (Q2FY26). The bank reported a standalone net profit of ₹20,160 crore, an impressive 9.97% rise compared to ₹18,331 crore in the same quarter last year. This growth was primarily fueled by robust non-interest income. Net interest income saw a modest increase of 3.28% year-on-year, reaching ₹42,984 crore. Furthermore, SBI demonstrated an improvement in its asset quality, with the gross non-performing asset (NPA) ratio declining to 1.73% from 1.83% in the previous quarter. The net NPA ratio also improved, standing at 0.42% compared to 0.53% a year ago. Total advances grew by a healthy 12.7% year-on-year, with strong contributions from retail, SME, and agricultural loans. These results significantly exceeded analyst expectations, who had anticipated flat or even declining profit growth for the quarter.
Impact: The strong financial performance, especially exceeding market expectations and showing improvement in asset quality, is a significant positive catalyst for SBI's stock. This can lead to increased investor confidence, potential upgrades from analysts, and sustained upward momentum in its share price. The outperformance against a weak market highlights the stock's resilience and fundamental strength. The S&P Global Ratings upgrade further solidifies the bank's position and future prospects, suggesting continued market leadership and strong financial health. This news is highly positive for investors holding SBI stock and can attract new investment, potentially benefiting the banking sector as a whole due to SBI's size and influence. Impact rating: 8/10.
