Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) bank management has acknowledged that the impact of past bank mergers, though delayed, is now contributing to enhanced operational efficiency. The banking sector has been a standout performer during the recent Q2 earnings season, delivering more positive surprises than other sectors. Analysts anticipate this trend of better-than-expected performance to persist.
The government's agenda appears focused on creating 'global-sized' banks, indicating that further mergers within the PSU banking space could be announced soon. Unlike previous merger strategies that often paired weaker banks with stronger ones, future consolidation is expected to be driven by leveraging specific strengths of the merging entities.
The distinction between a 'global-sized' bank and a true 'global bank' is noted, with India likely prioritizing the former in the near term. Banking stocks are viewed favorably due to recent valuation adjustments over the past three years, increasing the probability of their improved performance. Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs), who have shown a preference for banking stocks and have recently made a partial return to the market, could further boost these stocks when they increase their investments.
Investors are advised to consider exposure to both PSU and private banks, as PSU banks are anticipated to attract greater investor interest in the near future. This analysis is based on data from the Stock Reports Plus report dated November 5, 2025, and identifies stocks with an estimated upside potential of up to 44%.
Impact: The consolidation of PSU banks and the resulting operational efficiencies are expected to strengthen the banking sector's profitability and stability. Increased investor confidence, driven by positive earnings and potential FPI inflows, could lead to significant capital appreciation in banking stocks, positively impacting the broader Indian stock market. The government's focus on creating larger, more competitive banks also aims to enhance India's financial system's resilience and global standing. Rating: 8/10.
