Zuno General Insurance Launches 'Fuel Guard' for Blended Fuel Damage

Zuno General Insurance has introduced 'Fuel Guard,' a new motor insurance add-on covering engine and fuel system damage linked to ethanol-blended petrol. The product targets passenger vehicles bought after April 2023 to address consumer concerns about fuel changes. For this unlisted firm, the launch serves as a strategic move to differentiate its portfolio while working toward a FY27 breakeven goal.

Zuno General Insurance has launched a new motor insurance add-on, 'Fuel Guard,' specifically designed to cover physical damage to vehicle engines and fuel systems caused by the use of manufacturer-approved ethanol-blended petrol. This product arrives as India intensifies its push toward higher ethanol-blended fuel mandates, which has created uncertainty for many car owners regarding the long-term impact on engine longevity and performance.

The 'Fuel Guard' add-on functions as a protection layer for existing motor insurance policies. It is specifically aimed at addressing repair costs that could arise from using modern fuel blends. To manage its underwriting risk and ensure the product remains sustainable, Zuno has implemented specific eligibility requirements. Only passenger vehicles purchased after April 2023 are eligible for this coverage. Furthermore, the policy requires that owners strictly adhere to the manufacturer’s prescribed maintenance schedule and that no unauthorized engine or fuel system modifications have been made to the vehicle.

As a private, unlisted company—formerly known as Edelweiss General Insurance—Zuno operates under a different set of financial considerations compared to publicly traded insurance firms. The company is currently focused on scaling its business and aiming to reach a breakeven point by the end of the 2026-27 financial year. By launching niche products like 'Fuel Guard,' the company is attempting to carve out a competitive space in a highly crowded motor insurance market where standard policies often exclude such damage.

For the company, the success of this add-on will depend on its ability to accurately price the risk associated with ethanol-related engine issues. If claims are higher than expected, it could impact the product's profitability, making the claims experience and loss ratios in this segment key areas for management to track.

Looking ahead, observers of the Indian insurance sector will monitor how other general insurers respond to this product rollout. If consumer demand for such specific coverage grows, it may lead to similar product launches across the industry. For Zuno, the immediate focus remains on executing its growth strategy and maintaining financial discipline as it approaches its stated FY27 profitability target.
