Wealth-tech firm ZFunds has introduced a B2B platform allowing mutual fund distributors to offer US equity and ETF trading to their clients. This move addresses the ongoing investor demand for global assets following restrictions on domestic international feeder funds. The platform provides integrated tax compliance support and uses ViewTrade for backend brokerage services.
ZFunds has launched a new platform designed to help mutual fund distributors and wealth managers in India facilitate US stock and ETF trading for their clients. Unlike most investment apps that cater directly to individual retail investors, this service focuses on a business-to-business model. It allows financial advisors to onboard clients, manage international portfolios, and handle regulatory requirements directly through the platform.
Filling the Gap Left by Feeder Funds
This launch comes at a time when many Indian mutual funds have stopped accepting fresh subscriptions for their international feeder schemes due to regulatory investment limits. This has left many investors looking for alternative ways to gain exposure to global markets. ZFunds aims to tap into this demand by allowing wealth managers to fill the void with direct access to US-listed instruments. The platform uses ViewTrade for backend brokerage operations.
Offering and Fees
Investors using the platform can access a variety of global assets, including thematic ETFs covering sectors like artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and clean energy. It also offers access to dollar-denominated US Treasury bills, which are currently not available as direct instruments in the Indian market. The minimum transfer requirement is set at $100. The platform charges brokerage fees starting at 0.3% per trade, which decreases to 0.1% for larger trade volumes. A significant portion of this revenue is shared with the distributor to incentivize the use of the platform.
Compliance and Risks for Investors
One of the main challenges for Indian investors trading in US stocks is managing tax documentation, such as the Schedule FA form. ZFunds has included pre-formatted documentation within the platform to help users simplify this process. While this may assist with compliance, investors should remain aware of the risks involved in foreign investing. These include foreign exchange rate volatility, where the value of the investment can fluctuate based on the rupee-dollar exchange rate, and the tax implications under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). Changes in tax laws or remittance limits set by the Reserve Bank of India can also impact the feasibility of these investments.
Future Outlook
While the platform currently focuses on US markets, the company has indicated plans to introduce Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities (UCITS) funds soon. This would potentially allow Indian investors to access markets beyond the United States. For now, the key factor for investors and distributors to monitor will be how effectively the platform handles tax reporting and compliance, as regulatory scrutiny on foreign remittances remains high. The platform's success will likely depend on the adoption rate among professional wealth managers who are looking for tools to manage international exposure for their clients.
