Vegafin Raises Rs 1,000 Crore, Acquires NBFC Bizloan

Fintech startup Vegafin has secured Rs 1,000 crore in funding from investors including Premji Invest, Norwest, and Lok Capital. The capital will support the acquisition of Gurugram-based NBFC Bizloan to expedite its entry into the MSME lending market. This move allows the firm to leverage an existing network of 35 branches and Rs 235 crore in assets as it targets the large credit gap for small businesses in India.

Vegafin, a newly formed fintech platform, has secured Rs 1,000 crore in capital to expand its presence in the Indian MSME lending market. The investment round was backed by notable institutional investors, including Premji Invest, Norwest, and Lok Capital. To accelerate its operational launch, the company is acquiring Bizloan, a Gurugram-based non-banking financial company (NBFC) founded in 2018.

Strategic Acquisition of Bizloan

The acquisition provides Vegafin with an immediate infrastructure footprint, including more than 35 branches spread across five states. Bizloan currently manages an assets under management (AUM) portfolio of Rs 235 crore, which will serve as the foundation for the entity's credit operations. According to founder Bijith Bhaskar, a former ICICI Bank executive, this integration is expected to fast-track the company’s market entry by 18 to 24 months compared to building a network from scratch.

Targeting the MSME Credit Gap

Vegafin aims to address the significant credit gap in the MSME sector, which is estimated to exceed Rs 30 lakh crore. The company plans to implement a hybrid business model that combines AI-driven credit assessment with its physical branch network. This strategy is intended to serve small businesses, such as kirana stores and local pharmacies, which often face challenges in securing loans through traditional channels because of limited formal documentation. The fresh capital is earmarked for scaling the loan book and developing proprietary loan management systems.

Key Monitorables for Investors

As the company moves to scale, its ability to maintain asset quality will be a crucial factor. Lending to the MSME segment involves inherent risks, particularly regarding repayment capacity during periods of economic pressure. Furthermore, the fintech lending sector in India is highly competitive, and the firm’s long-term success will depend on its ability to integrate the acquired NBFC efficiently and scale its technology platform. Management has stated a goal to triple the current AUM within 12 to 18 months. Future updates regarding the efficiency of the underwriting model, the pace of branch expansion, and the stability of the loan portfolio will be important indicators for stakeholders assessing the firm's growth trajectory.
