Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Profit Jumps 35% to ₹412 Crore

Tamilnad Mercantile Bank reported a 35% increase in quarterly net profit to ₹412 crore, driven by strong growth in retail and agricultural lending. Shares rose over 13% as the lender improved its net interest margins and significantly reduced bad loans. Investors are tracking how the bank manages its ₹280 crore technology investment plan alongside expanding its branch network.

Detailed Coverage

Tamilnad Mercantile Bank (TMB) has reported a strong start to the 2027 fiscal year, with net profit for the quarter ending June 30, 2026, rising 35% to ₹412 crore. This is a marked improvement from the ₹305 crore profit reported in the same quarter last year. The bank's core profitability, measured by net interest income, grew by 32% year-on-year to ₹765 crore, supported by an improvement in net interest margins, which moved to 4.3% from 3.8% in the previous year.

The bank's lending portfolio saw significant expansion, with total advances climbing 27% to ₹57,306 crore. Much of this growth originated in the retail sector, which grew by 36%, and the agricultural segment, which grew by 30%. With agricultural loans now making up nearly 40% of the bank's total advances at ₹23,399 crore, the bank remains heavily focused on rural and semi-urban credit demand. On the funding side, the bank grew its deposits by 19.7% to ₹64,409 crore, with Current Account Savings Account (CASA) deposits rising by 17% to reach ₹16,852 crore.

Asset Quality and Operational Focus

Asset quality metrics for the bank showed improvement during the quarter. Gross Non-Performing Assets, which track the proportion of bad or overdue loans, fell by 53 basis points to 0.73%. Net Non-Performing Assets stood at 0.17%, indicating a healthy loan book. Managing Director and CEO Salee S Nair noted that the bank is currently participating in the Reserve Bank of India's special forex swap facility to mobilize about $50 million, while also considering the establishment of international liaison offices to support future business.

Investors may monitor the bank's capital allocation strategy as it embarks on a ₹280 crore investment in information technology. This spending is intended to bolster cybersecurity, automate banking processes, and enhance digital services. The bank also continues to expand its physical footprint, having added six new branches this quarter, bringing its total national network to 628 branches. Following the announcement of these results, shares of the bank ended Monday's trading session on the BSE at ₹911.00, marking a gain of over 13.24%.

While the bank has reported low levels of stress in its current portfolio, future performance will depend on the bank's ability to maintain these asset quality standards amid shifting macroeconomic conditions. Key monitorables for shareholders include the efficiency of the new technology spending, the pace of deposit mobilization, and whether the bank can sustain its net interest margins while continuing to aggressively grow its loan book.
