TVS Capital Funds Enters Private Credit With ₹1,250 Cr Fund

TVS Capital Funds has launched 'TVS Alts,' a private credit venture seeking an initial ₹750 crore with a ₹500 crore green-shoe option. The fund aims to provide secured debt to mid-market companies, targeting annual returns of 16-17%. This move marks the firm's expansion into alternative investment strategies beyond its traditional private equity focus.

TVS Capital Funds is expanding its investment reach by entering the private credit market. The firm has filed for a Category II Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) license with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to operate its new venture, TVS Alts. The fund is targeting a total corpus of ₹1,250 crore, which includes a base target of ₹750 crore and an additional ₹500 crore green-shoe option.

Investment Strategy and Target Market

The fund’s strategy is to provide secured debt financing to performing mid-market companies in India. Private credit, or non-bank lending, typically serves companies that may require capital for expansion, mergers, acquisitions, or pre-IPO funding but find bank lending requirements too rigid. TVS Alts plans to execute deals ranging from ₹40 crore to ₹100 crore per transaction.

Management has set a target return of 16-17% annually. For investors, this return profile is significantly higher than traditional fixed income products, but it reflects the higher risk involved. Lending to mid-market companies carries credit risk, meaning the safety of the capital and the promised returns depend heavily on the financial health and cash flow of the borrowing companies. If these companies face business slowdowns or liquidity issues, the fund's ability to generate those returns could be impacted.

Market Context and Timing

This launch comes as the Indian private credit market is witnessing increased interest. As traditional banks become more selective with their lending criteria to manage their own risk, mid-market companies are increasingly looking toward private credit funds for capital. This supply-demand gap creates opportunities for funds like TVS Alts, which aim to combine banking-style risk assessment with the agility of private investment firms.

Led by Managing Partner Manish Makaria, the fund has already begun assessing potential opportunities to deploy capital once regulatory approval is received. The firm plans to build a portfolio consisting of approximately 14 to 15 investments over the fund's life cycle.

This initiative coincides with the firm's broader diversification efforts. Following the successful closure of its fourth private equity fund, which raised approximately ₹4,000 crore, TVS Capital Funds is positioning itself to grow its presence in wealth and asset management.

The immediate monitorables for investors and stakeholders will be the timeline for final SEBI approval and the firm's ability to source high-quality borrowers that can justify the targeted 16-17% returns while maintaining a manageable risk profile.
