TMB Overhauls Tech Systems After Rs 9,000 Cr Technical Glitch

Tamilnad Mercantile Bank (TMB) has completed a major technology upgrade to automate transaction processing and prevent manual errors following a Rs 9,000 crore accidental credit in 2023. Alongside these system improvements, the bank reported a 35% year-on-year rise in profit for the June quarter, signaling a focus on operational stability and growth.

Tamilnad Mercantile Bank (TMB) has concluded a comprehensive overhaul of its transaction-processing and security infrastructure. This move serves as a critical step in addressing the vulnerabilities exposed by a high-profile technical error in September 2023, where a manual file-upload glitch resulted in an erroneous Rs 9,000 crore credit to a customer's account. The incident led to significant reputational concerns and the resignation of the bank's then Managing Director and CEO, S. Krishnan, later that month.

The bank has shifted away from the manual processing of files—which was the core failure point in the 2023 event—and adopted a straight-through processing system. By integrating its operations directly with clearing houses using Infosys’ Finacle core banking solution, TMB has eliminated the need for human intervention in file uploads. Additionally, the bank has upgraded its customer engagement tools to the Infosys Digital Engagement Hub, aiming to create a more secure and unified digital experience across all customer devices.

To manage digital operational risks, TMB has introduced real-time fraud monitoring systems. These tools use AI to scan for unusual transactions and alert the fraud risk management team, allowing for verification before funds are processed. This focus on cybersecurity is a priority for the bank, which plans to allocate approximately 20% of its total IT budget to security upgrades in the upcoming fiscal period.

While the bank has been rebuilding its technical framework, its financial performance has remained strong. For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, TMB reported a net profit of Rs 411.51 crore, marking a 34.97% increase compared to the same period last year. The bank’s net interest margin, a key metric of profitability, improved to 4.29% from 3.84% in the previous year. This suggests that the lender is managing to balance its technological spending with operational efficiency.

Looking ahead, investors may monitor the execution of the bank's broader strategy. TMB is currently in the process of repurposing a significant portion of its workforce into sales-focused roles, a shift intended to drive business growth. While the technological updates aim to mitigate operational risks, the bank's success will depend on managing the inherent pressures of this workforce transition and the broader sector-wide challenge of rising deposit costs. The bank's ability to maintain these profit margins while finalizing its digital and workforce transformation will be the key factor to watch in upcoming quarterly results.
