Spandana Sphoorty Q1 Profit Misses Estimates Despite NII Growth

Spandana Sphoorty reported a 125% quarter-on-quarter jump in profit for Q1 FY27, yet results lagged behind analyst estimates by 28%. While net interest income performed strongly, a sharp drop in assignment income pressured total earnings, prompting a neutral outlook from analysts.

Detailed Coverage

Spandana Sphoorty Financial Limited reported its financial performance for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, highlighting a sharp increase in quarterly profit alongside a notable shortfall compared to market expectations. The company recorded a profit after tax of approximately ₹119 million, representing a 125% increase over the previous quarter. Despite this growth, the final profit figure landed about 28% below what analysts had projected, reflecting challenges in certain revenue streams.

A key driver of the company's performance during the quarter was its net interest income, which represents the difference between interest earned on loans and interest paid on borrowings. This core income metric grew by 14% compared to the same period last year and surged 40% quarter-on-quarter to reach approximately ₹1.5 billion. This specific growth area actually outperformed market expectations by 18%, signaling healthy underlying credit demand.

However, the overall profitability was held back by a significant decline in non-interest income, which totaled approximately ₹230 million for the quarter. This result was substantially below the estimated ₹573 million. Management reports indicate that this shortfall was primarily due to lower income generated from the assignment of loan portfolios, a business activity where lenders sell pools of loans to other institutions.

Following these results, Motilal Oswal has maintained a neutral stance on the stock with a target price of ₹290. This valuation is derived using a price-to-book multiple of 0.9x based on projected earnings for March 2028. Analysts remain optimistic about the long-term growth trajectory, projecting a compound annual growth rate of 43% in loan disbursements and 42% in assets under management between fiscal years 2026 and 2028. The company is aiming for a return on assets of 3.2% and a return on equity of 11% by FY28.

Investors looking ahead should track the company’s ability to recover its assignment income, as fluctuations in this area can create volatility in quarterly earnings. Additionally, monitoring the consistency of net interest income growth will be crucial to see if the company can bridge the gap between its current performance and market expectations in upcoming quarters.
