South Indian Bank Q2 Profit Rises 21% To ₹426 Crore

South Indian Bank reported a 21% jump in net profit to ₹426.13 crore for the second quarter of FY27. Strong growth in net interest income and a significant reduction in bad loans drove the performance. Investors are monitoring the bank's strategy to maintain margins and deposit growth in a competitive environment.

South Indian Bank has reported a net profit of ₹426.13 crore for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, reflecting a 21% increase compared to the ₹351.37 crore earned in the same period last year. This growth follows a strong performance in its core banking operations, characterized by higher interest income and improved loan quality.

Focus on Interest Margins

The bank's net interest income, which is the difference between interest earned on loans and interest paid on deposits, climbed 38% to reach ₹1,116 crore. A key factor behind this improved profitability was the expansion of net interest margins to 3.33%, up from 2.80% in the previous year. For banking investors, margins are a vital health indicator, as they show how efficiently the bank manages its funding costs versus its lending rates. Widening margins typically suggest that the bank is effectively passing on interest rate changes to borrowers or optimizing its deposit mix.

Improvement in Asset Quality

Under the direction of Managing Director and CEO Mahesh Muralidhar Pai, the bank has aggressively shifted its strategy toward "Quality Credit Growth." This approach focuses on lending to lower-risk segments such as corporate clients, MSMEs, housing, and gold loans. This strategic pivot appears to have contributed to a significant improvement in the bank's loan book. Gross non-performing assets, which measure the portion of loans that are not being repaid, fell to 1.24% from 2.93% a year ago. Similarly, net non-performing assets dropped to 0.09% from 0.56%.

Deposit Strategy and Outlook

Growing the deposit base is currently a major focus for the Indian banking sector as banks compete for liquidity. South Indian Bank saw its total retail deposits grow by 15% to reach ₹1,29,353 crore. The bank also reported strong traction in its non-resident Indian segment, which added ₹5,008 crore to reach a total of ₹38,203 crore. The Current Account and Savings Account, or CASA portfolio, grew by 17.56%. A strong CASA ratio is generally viewed as a positive because it provides the bank with low-cost funds, which helps protect profit margins.

Investors may track whether the bank can continue to grow these deposits while maintaining its margins in a competitive interest rate environment. The ability to sustain this asset quality as the loan book grows will be a key point for shareholders to monitor in upcoming quarters.
