Shriram Finance Targets 18-20% Growth as EV Loans Surge

Shriram Finance expects steady commercial vehicle demand despite price hikes and is rapidly scaling electric vehicle financing, with monthly disbursements reaching ₹250 crore. Supported by a major ₹39,618 crore capital infusion from Japan’s MUFG, the company is targeting 18-20% asset growth for FY27. Investors are watching how this expansion affects loan quality as the lender aims to double its size within five years.

Shriram Finance, a prominent player in the Indian vehicle financing sector, continues to project a positive outlook for commercial vehicle (CV) demand. Despite recent price increases for vehicles driven by rising commodity costs, the company believes the underlying economic activity in India will continue to support steady credit demand. This confidence follows a robust start to the 2027 fiscal year, with the company reporting a standalone net profit of ₹3,444.56 crore for the first quarter, reflecting a 59.8% increase compared to the same period last year.

Scaling Electric Vehicle Financing

A major focus for the company is its shift toward electric vehicle (EV) financing. Shriram Finance has seen a sharp increase in this segment, with monthly loan disbursements rising to ₹250 crore, a five-fold increase from ₹50 crore just a year ago. The company projects that this figure could double to ₹500 crore next year. To support this, the lender has entered into strategic partnerships, including a memorandum of understanding with VinFast India, to offer tailored financing solutions for EV buyers across two, three, and four-wheeler segments. This strategy aims to capture the early growth in the electric mobility sector as adoption spreads.

Capital Strength and Expansion

The company’s aggressive growth plans are backed by a significant capital infusion from Japan’s MUFG, which recently invested ₹39,618 crore for a 20% stake. This move has provided Shriram Finance with substantial financial flexibility, which it plans to utilize until at least 2030. The company is currently executing an expansion strategy that involves opening approximately 150 new branches and adding thousands of employees this fiscal year. This network expansion is intended to help the company increase its market share in both rural and urban regions, supporting its goal to double its total size within the next five years.

Risks and Monitorables

While the growth trajectory appears strong, investors may monitor certain financial metrics closely. As the company expands its loan book and shifts toward new segments like EVs, maintaining asset quality is critical. In the first quarter of FY27, the company reported a Gross Non-Performing Asset (NPA) ratio of 4.64%. While this reflects the company's established risk management, it remains a figure that shareholders track to ensure that the pursuit of 18-20% asset growth does not compromise the quality of the loan portfolio. Additionally, shifts in the mix of loans toward EVs could influence profit margins, as the interest rate and risk profile for these assets may differ from traditional commercial vehicle loans. The company’s ability to navigate potential volatility in freight rates and rural demand during monsoon cycles will also be a key factor in its performance in the coming quarters.
