Razorpay Integrates Payments with OpenAI for Instant AI Monetization

Razorpay, a leading Indian payments company, has partnered with OpenAI to embed its payment solutions directly into OpenAI's Codex AI coding platform and ChatGPT. This partnership allows developers to integrate payment infrastructure into their applications much faster, cutting setup time and accelerating the journey from concept to revenue. Developers can instruct Codex to build an application and automatically configure Razorpay's payment gateway, bypassing manual setup.

Beyond Codex, Razorpay is extending its payment management to ChatGPT. Businesses can use the Razorpay app within ChatGPT's directory to manage transactions, track refunds, and reconcile bank statements using conversational commands. Shashank Kumar, Co-founder and MD of Razorpay, said the company aims to make earning money as effortless as building with AI. Oliver Jay, Managing Director, International, at OpenAI, noted that Codex adoption in India has grown significantly, with weekly users increasing fourfold in February alone, indicating strong potential for such integrations.

Capturing the AI Opportunity

This partnership places Razorpay to capitalize on the rapid growth of AI development. As AI tools like Codex and ChatGPT make application creation faster, the need for quick monetization solutions is crucial. Razorpay is positioning itself as the essential financial infrastructure for AI-generated applications. This integration supports a future where AI agents can initiate transactions automatically, a trend also seen across major payment networks like Visa and Mastercard. OpenAI's Codex has seen its usage double globally, reaching over 1 million developers.

Razorpay's Market Position

Razorpay operates in India's large and growing fintech market. The Indian fintech market is projected to reach $109.06 billion by 2031, with digital payments being a dominant segment. Razorpay competes with domestic companies like Paytm Business and PayU, as well as global players such as PayPal and Stripe. While global rivals are also using AI for payment integrations, Razorpay's direct integration into OpenAI's developer platforms offers an advantage for AI development workflows. Razorpay has raised significant capital, including $375 million in December 2021 at a $7.5 billion valuation. Its valuation was noted at $9.2 billion mid-2025, though recent data suggests a potential discount. The company launched an AI Agent Studio in March 2026, further showing its focus on AI.

Potential Risks

Despite the strategic move, Razorpay faces potential risks. The rapid advancement of AI could eventually make payment infrastructure more of a commodity if AI tools can easily generate complex payment integrations. Razorpay's reliance on OpenAI's platform also creates a dependency; any changes in OpenAI's strategy or platform could affect Razorpay's offering. Global competitors like Stripe and PayPal are also investing heavily in AI payment capabilities. Additionally, the fintech sector faces ongoing regulatory scrutiny, especially concerning data privacy and AI use in financial transactions.

What's Next

This collaboration positions Razorpay to benefit from AI integration in fintech, a sector expected to grow further in India. By embedding payments directly into AI development processes, Razorpay aims to become the go-to monetization solution for AI-generated applications. This strategy anticipates a future where AI-driven systems increasingly initiate and manage financial transactions, making seamless, embedded payments essential for developers and businesses.
