RBI Policy D-Day: Markets Brace for Outcome as LIC OFS, Nykaa, Tata Motors Headline

Indian markets are trading cautiously today as the Reserve Bank of India prepares to announce its monetary policy, with the repo rate widely expected to remain at 5.25%. Investors are tracking the LIC OFS retail window, Nykaa’s strong Q1 results, and Tata Motors’ new vehicle scrapping facility. These updates, alongside the central bank's commentary on inflation, are set to drive movement in banking, auto, and retail stocks.

Indian stock markets are showing a cautious trend today as investors wait for the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) monetary policy committee decision. While the repo rate is widely expected to be held steady at 5.25%, the market's attention is focused on the central bank's commentary regarding inflation, domestic liquidity, and future economic growth forecasts. Because changes in interest rates directly affect borrowing costs, stocks in rate-sensitive sectors—specifically banking, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), real estate, and auto—are likely to experience volatility throughout the trading session.

Simultaneously, the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) is in the spotlight as the retail portion of the government's offer for sale (OFS) opened today, August 5, 2026. The government has set a floor price of ₹382 per share for the sale. Following strong institutional demand earlier, the government exercised its option to sell an additional stake, bringing the total divestment to 6.5%. While the discounted floor price may attract retail interest, investors typically monitor how large supply events like an OFS affect the stock price in the near term, as the influx of new shares can occasionally create temporary downward pressure.

In the corporate space, Nykaa (FSN E-Commerce Ventures) is seeing investor interest after reporting a strong start to the new financial year. The company posted a net profit of ₹80 crore for the first quarter of FY27, which marks a 3.3x increase compared to the same period last year. Complementing its financial performance, Nykaa also announced the acquisition of a 51% majority stake in Aminu Wellness, a premium dermocosmetic skincare brand, for ₹32 crore. This move signals the company's strategy to deepen its presence in the high-growth, science-backed premium skincare segment.

Meanwhile, Tata Motors continues to expand its sustainability infrastructure with the launch of a new 'Re.Wi.Re' vehicle scrapping facility in Patna, Bihar. This facility, operated by the Kalahanu Bothra Group, has the capacity to dismantle 15,000 end-of-life vehicles annually. This is the 12th such center for the company across India. While these scrapping facilities represent a long-term strategic investment and are part of the company's sustainability initiatives, they are not expected to have an immediate, material impact on the company’s quarterly earnings.

As the day progresses, the primary monitorable for investors remains the RBI's press conference and policy document. Any unexpected stance on inflation or liquidity management could shift market sentiment, particularly for interest-rate-sensitive stocks that have been under pressure in recent months due to borrowing costs.
