RBI Evaluates Anup Bagchi as HDFC Bank CEO Successor

The Reserve Bank of India is vetting ICICI Prudential Life Insurance CEO Anup Bagchi for the top role at HDFC Bank. With current chief Sashidhar Jagdishan set to step down on October 26, 2026, the regulator is also reviewing internal candidate Kaizad Bharucha, who faces a regulatory tenure limit.

The Reserve Bank of India is currently evaluating potential candidates to lead HDFC Bank as the private lender approaches a critical leadership transition. The regulatory review process is focused on Anup Bagchi, the current Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, who has emerged as a primary candidate for the top position.

Regulators are conducting an assessment to determine if Bagchi’s recent experience outside of mainstream banking for the last three years meets the requirements for overseeing such a large and complex financial institution. This vetting is part of the standard regulatory oversight intended to ensure the incoming leader can navigate the current banking environment and regulatory requirements effectively.

Balancing Internal and External Options

HDFC Bank has also put forward its Deputy Managing Director, Kaizad Bharucha, as an alternative candidate for the role. However, his potential appointment is subject to regulatory hurdles. Bharucha has served as a whole-time director at the bank since 2014. Under existing central bank guidelines, there is a 15-year cumulative service limit for board-level roles in banking institutions. To appoint him, the bank would need a specific tenure extension or a waiver from the regulator, which is typically provided only under rare and exceptional circumstances.

With Sashidhar Jagdishan scheduled to conclude his tenure as Managing Director and CEO on October 26, 2026, the bank's board is operating under a strict timeline to finalize the leadership change. The selection process has been comprehensive, involving an initial pool of over 150 applicants, which was subsequently narrowed down through a series of interviews.

Investors will likely track the official announcement regarding the appointment, as the stability of top-level management is a vital factor for the bank's long-term strategic direction. The final decision will depend on whether the regulator approves the external candidate or provides an exemption for the internal choice, ensuring that the transition of power remains smooth before the upcoming deadline.
