Cyber threats are also escalating, with AI enabling sophisticated fraud, synthetic identity creation, and AI-powered phishing attacks that bypass traditional defenses. AI could also enable market manipulation and volatility through coordinated algorithmic trading, posing another systemic risk. The banking sector's considerable investment in AI, projected to account for 20% of global spending in 2028, could become a liability if these risks are not proactively managed, potentially widening the 'AI-gap' between sophisticated adopters and those caught unprepared.

Balancing Innovation and Risk Management

The path forward for AI in finance depends on striking a balance between innovation and robust risk management. The Reserve Bank of India's proposed Framework for Responsible and Ethical Enablement of Artificial Intelligence (FREE-AI) and similar global initiatives aim to establish clear guidelines for AI deployment, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and fairness. Industry analysts predict that the next three to five years will be critical in determining which financial institutions can successfully use AI while managing its risks to gain lasting advantages.
