Punjab & Sind Bank Q2 Profit Jumps 40% to ₹412 Crore

Punjab & Sind Bank reported a 40% rise in net profit to ₹412 crore for the second quarter of FY27. The growth was driven by higher interest income and a significant reduction in bad loans, with gross non-performing assets improving to 2.09%.

Punjab & Sind Bank posted a strong financial performance for the quarter ending September 2026, with net profit rising by 40% to reach ₹412 crore. This is a noticeable increase from the ₹295 crore profit the bank reported in the same quarter last year. The improvement reflects a combination of better core business income and a healthier loan book.

Growth in Interest Income and Margins

The bank’s core business activity showed healthy growth during the quarter. Net interest income, which is the money earned from interest on loans minus interest paid on deposits, climbed to ₹1,162 crore. This represents a growth of more than 22% compared to the previous year. Furthermore, the bank's net interest margin, a key indicator of profitability in the lending business, improved by 17 basis points to reach 2.77%. This margin expansion suggests that the bank is effectively managing its cost of funds while earning better returns on its loans.

Asset Quality Improvements

One of the most important takeaways for investors from the latest results is the improvement in asset quality. The bank successfully reduced its gross non-performing assets to 2.09%, down from 2.92% in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. This also marks a sequential improvement from the 2.21% reported in the preceding quarter. Net non-performing assets, which account for provisions already made against bad loans, also declined to 0.61% from 0.83% in the same period last year.

Falling bad loan levels typically signal that a bank’s credit book is becoming cleaner. A cleaner loan book often requires less money to be set aside as a safety buffer for potential losses, known as provisions. The bank recorded a reduction in these provisions and contingencies, which directly helped boost the bottom-line profit for the quarter.

What Investors Should Track

While the current numbers show clear improvement, the bank’s future performance will depend on its ability to maintain these gains. Investors may track whether the bank can continue to grow its loan book while keeping asset quality stable. The sustainability of the net interest margin will also be important, as competitive pressure in the banking sector can sometimes impact lending rates. Additionally, the bank's ability to maintain its low NPA levels in an evolving economic environment will remain a key monitorable for the coming quarters.
