Punjab National Bank Targets 13% Credit Growth, Invests Rs 3,400 Cr In Tech

Punjab National Bank plans to grow its loan book by 12-13% over the next 18 months, supported by strong demand from small businesses. To improve efficiency and customer service, the lender is investing Rs 3,400 crore in artificial intelligence and digital security systems.

Punjab National Bank (PNB) is setting an ambitious roadmap for the next year and a half, projecting a credit growth of 12-13 percent. The state-owned lender attributes this outlook to steady demand within the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) segment, where loan growth is currently outpacing other business categories.

Strategic Shift And Margin Focus

Beyond simply expanding its loan book, PNB is focusing on how it earns money from its assets. The bank is currently restructuring its loan portfolio by moving away from lower-interest lending and increasing its focus on higher-yielding areas, such as gold loans. This is part of a broader plan to improve net interest margins—the difference between what a bank earns on loans and what it pays for deposits—targeting a level near 3 percent. For context, the bank reported a margin of 2.68 percent in the first quarter of the 2027 fiscal year.

The bank has shown solid financial health in recent reporting, with a standalone net profit of Rs 5,253.29 crore for the quarter ended June 2026. For the full fiscal year 2026, the bank recorded a total net profit of Rs 16,904 crore. Asset quality has also seen consistent improvement, with Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPA) at 2.78 percent as of the latest reporting period.

Massive Digital Transformation

To support its future operations, PNB is deploying Rs 3,400 crore into a major technology overhaul. This spending is not just for software upgrades; it is aimed at building stronger cybersecurity defenses, improving fraud detection, and enhancing the overall customer experience through digital platforms. The bank has already rolled out an AI-powered chatbot to help customers with their queries and is exploring the use of generative artificial intelligence for personalized wealth management services.

Risks And Monitorables

While the bank’s expansion plans are clear, there are areas investors may keep an eye on. Successfully executing such a large technology project is a complex task, and the bank will need to ensure these digital tools effectively improve efficiency without leading to unexpected operational hurdles. Additionally, sustaining healthy profit margins will depend on how the bank manages its deposit costs and maintains its credit quality amidst changing interest rate environments. The ability to integrate new AI technologies seamlessly while keeping cyber risks under control will remain a key factor for the bank's long-term performance.
