Fintech firm Pine Labs is shifting its focus to Voice AI and autonomous 'agentic commerce' to streamline merchant operations. The company posted a 20% rise in Q1FY27 revenue to ₹737 crore, with profits increasing fourfold. This new strategy targets deeper integration of AI in UPI payments and cross-border commerce.
Gurugram-based fintech firm Pine Labs is realigning its product strategy to prioritize Voice AI and 'agentic commerce.' This shift aims to move beyond traditional payment processing by integrating artificial intelligence directly into merchant workflows. By deploying voice-activated interfaces, the company intends to allow business owners to manage operations and query transaction data using natural language.
Expanding Through AI and Agentic Commerce
The company is introducing an 'Agentic Commerce Suite' designed to automate complex tasks without constant human oversight. A key component of this initiative is the Pine Labs Payment Protocol (P3P), which allows AI agents to perform pre-authorized UPI transactions. This technology is intended to speed up checkouts and simplify the payment experience. Pine Labs has already begun integrating these solutions through partnerships with entities like L&T Finance and BigBasket, embedding these 'agentic storefronts' into existing platforms to reach a wider merchant base.
Financial Performance and Strategic Growth
These technological investments come alongside solid financial growth. In the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 (Q1FY27), the company reported a consolidated revenue of ₹737 crore, representing a 20% increase compared to the same period last year. Profitability also improved significantly, with net profit rising to ₹19.57 crore from ₹4.79 crore in the previous year.
The firm is also scaling its credit-on-UPI segment, which transforms UPI from a simple payment method into a tool for engagement and cross-selling. Additionally, the company is leveraging its recently acquired payment aggregator-cross border (PA-CB) license to facilitate international payments. This enables Indian merchants to accept global payments more easily, serving as another pillar for future revenue growth.
Operational Risks and Future Outlook
While the pivot to AI and agentic commerce offers significant growth potential, it brings new challenges. The company faces the task of governing autonomous AI transactions, which involves strict technical and regulatory requirements to ensure fraud prevention and security. Additionally, the rapid expansion of point-of-sale (POS) networks and global infrastructure upgrades requires substantial upfront spending. For observers and industry participants, the key monitorable will be how effectively the company can scale these AI-driven features while maintaining stable profit margins amid these rising operational costs. The company’s ability to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape for AI in payments will also be a critical factor for its long-term success.
