PhonePe and Visa Partner for Cardless Payments in 14 Nations

PhonePe and Visa have announced a strategic partnership to launch 'Tap to Pay,' cross-border QR payments, and smartphone-based merchant terminals. This collaboration aims to reduce reliance on physical cards and diversify PhonePe's digital offerings as the company moves toward its upcoming IPO.

At the Global Fintech Fest 2026, PhonePe and Visa unveiled a partnership to integrate cardless payment features directly into the PhonePe ecosystem. This move aims to reshape digital commerce for Indian users by enabling payments without physical credit or debit cards, focusing on three core areas: international transactions, merchant acceptance, and contactless payments.

Expanding Digital Payment Tools

The collaboration introduces a 'Cross Border Scan to Pay' feature, allowing Indian travelers to scan Visa-enabled QR codes in 14 countries, including Singapore, Japan, Thailand, and South Korea. This service simplifies international payments by removing the need for physical currency exchange or carrying cards.

For merchants, the new 'Smart Accept' solution transforms standard smartphones into point-of-sale terminals. This removes the requirement for expensive, dedicated card-reading hardware, potentially lowering the cost for small business owners to accept digital payments. Additionally, the launch includes 'Tap to Pay' for Android users, which uses tokenisation—a security method that masks actual card numbers with digital tokens—to allow secure NFC transactions at contactless terminals.

Strategic Pivot Toward IPO

For investors, this partnership marks a strategic expansion for PhonePe as it prepares for its upcoming public listing. Having received IPO approval in January 2026, the company is focusing on diversifying its revenue streams beyond the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). By integrating Visa’s global card network, PhonePe is positioning itself as an all-in-one payment gateway, reducing its dependence on the UPI ecosystem.

This diversification is particularly relevant given the regulatory pressure on UPI platforms. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has maintained limits on the market share of third-party UPI apps, including PhonePe. By expanding into card-based and international payments, the company seeks to build sustainable, fee-generating revenue models that are less dependent on purely domestic, non-chargeable UPI transactions.

Risks and Market Monitoring

While this partnership expands the company's capabilities, it also brings specific risks. The complexity of cross-border payments increases the potential for technical and security vulnerabilities, such as unauthorized push payment fraud, which remains a key concern for digital financial platforms. Furthermore, the success of these features depends on widespread adoption by both merchants and international retailers.

Investors will track how effectively the company executes this integration without compromising security or data privacy. The primary monitorables moving forward include the adoption rate of the new cardless features, the company’s ability to manage regulatory compliance across diverse international jurisdictions, and the timeline for its public offering as the company continues to refine its financial services portfolio.
