PhonePe Launches Credit Cards, Lending Suite to Target New Users

PhonePe introduced co-branded credit cards with HDFC Bank and SBI, alongside a 'Wishcard' for first-time borrowers, at the Global Fintech Fest 2026. This shift into lending aims to monetize its payment platform, but investors must monitor the risks of credit expansion and the company's financial performance. PhonePe is currently an unlisted private firm.

PhonePe has announced a significant expansion into the credit business at the Global Fintech Fest 2026. The company is moving beyond its traditional digital payment model to offer formal credit products, including co-branded credit cards with HDFC Bank and SBI, as well as a 'Wishcard' designed for users who are new to credit or have limited financial records.

Expanding the Business Model

The company’s new credit suite features cards like Ultimo and Uno in partnership with HDFC Bank, and the Select Black and Purple variants with SBI Card. These products are integrated directly into the PhonePe app, aiming to capture a large segment of the population that is currently underserved by traditional banking institutions. The Wishcard, which requires a fixed deposit starting at ₹2,000, is specifically designed to help students, freelancers, and homemakers build a credit history. By embedding these services into its existing payment interface, PhonePe is attempting to leverage its massive transactional data to assess creditworthiness and drive user engagement.

Financial Context and Risks

While the expansion into lending is a strategic effort to generate revenue beyond transaction processing fees, it introduces a different set of challenges. Lending is a capital-intensive business that requires strict control over asset quality to avoid bad loans. The company’s financial performance remains a point of interest for investors; in the fiscal year 2026, PhonePe reported a consolidated net loss of ₹2,792 crore against an operating revenue of ₹7,920 crore. Shifting to a credit-led model can help improve unit economics, but the risk of loan defaults and the cost of capital are significant factors that can impact future profitability.

Competitive and Regulatory Environment

The fintech credit sector in India is highly competitive, with established banks and several other large technology players vying for the same customer base. Additionally, the Reserve Bank of India has been increasing its oversight of digital lending platforms to ensure consumer protection and systemic stability. Any regulatory changes regarding digital credit onboarding or data usage could impact how quickly PhonePe can scale this new business line. Investors should also note that PhonePe operates as an unlisted private company. While it has previously announced intentions for an initial public offering, its shares are currently only available in the unlisted market, where liquidity is significantly lower than on public exchanges. Unlisted shares, recently reported around ₹20,966, carry different risks compared to shares of listed companies, including less transparency and potential difficulties in exiting the position.

The key monitorables for stakeholders in the coming quarters will be the adoption rate of the new credit products, the company's ability to maintain low delinquency rates in its loan portfolio, and any updates regarding its path to consolidated profitability and IPO plans.
