Paytm Stake Sale: Resilient Asset Management Sells ₹2,949 Crore Shares

Institutional investors acquired a 3% stake in One 97 Communications through a ₹2,949 crore block deal. While the seller is linked to Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, the proceeds will accrue to Antfin under an existing agreement. Paytm's stock fell 2.15% following the transaction.

On August 18, 2026, Resilient Asset Management B.V., an investment firm linked to Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, completed a significant block deal, offloading 1.92 crore shares of One 97 Communications, the parent company of Paytm. The transaction was valued at approximately ₹2,949 crore, with shares changing hands at ₹1,535.10 each.

While the entity executing the sale is associated with the founder, it is important for investors to note that the economic benefits of this transaction accrue to Antfin (Netherlands) Holding B.V. This arrangement stems from a 2023 optionally convertible debenture (OCD) agreement, meaning the sale does not represent a direct divestment by Vijay Shekhar Sharma of his own equity stake in the company.

The shares offloaded in the deal were quickly absorbed by a group of large institutional investors. SBI Mutual Fund led the participation, purchasing shares worth ₹831 crore. Other prominent institutional buyers included Societe Generale, Goldman Sachs Bank Europe, Tata AIA Life Insurance, Aditya Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund, and HDFC Mutual Fund, among several others. The strong participation from these entities indicates sustained interest from institutional players in the fintech company's stock despite recent volatility.

Following the announcement, Paytm's stock price on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) saw a decline of 2.15%, closing at ₹1,546.30. This price movement follows a period where the stock had recently reached a 56-month high, suggesting that investors may be taking some profits or adjusting positions after the stock's recent rally.

Investors monitoring Paytm should remain aware of broader risks affecting the sector. The company continues to navigate ongoing regulatory scrutiny regarding ownership structures and compliance practices, which can cause sensitivity in the stock price. Furthermore, the fintech sector remains highly competitive, with the company’s revenue growth closely linked to UPI transaction trends and service adoption. Market participants are often sensitive to large-scale stake unwinding by early investors, and such block deals can create short-term volatility in the stock.

The key monitorables for shareholders moving forward will be the company’s quarterly performance and any updates regarding regulatory compliance or business model adjustments. Investors may also watch for further developments regarding stake holdings by early investors as these positions continue to evolve.
