Overview

Payment system operators are seeking increased government subsidies for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions in the upcoming Union Budget. They argue the current ₹427 crore allocation is insufficient to cover the estimated ₹5,000-6,000 crore annual cost of maintaining zero-MDR on low-value person-to-merchant payments. Operators also propose a small MDR on high-value merchant transactions to ensure sustainability.
