Ondo Finance has appointed John Hoffman, formerly of Invesco and Grayscale, to spearhead the development and distribution of tokenized investment products. This move signals a strategic shift towards offering managed portfolios on blockchain rails, aiming to replicate and accelerate the success of ETFs.

Ondo Finance is bolstering its executive team with the hiring of John Hoffman, a seasoned executive from Invesco and Grayscale. Hoffman will serve as managing director and head of product portfolios, tasked with expanding Ondo's range of tokenized investment products beyond individual stocks and Treasury notes.

Focus on Managed Portfolios

Hoffman's mandate includes building and distributing tokenized investment baskets developed in collaboration with asset managers. This strategic direction indicates Ondo's ambition to move beyond simple tokenization of single assets towards offering more complex, managed investment strategies natively on the blockchain.

"Our next step is building the world's most trusted platform for intelligently managed, onchain investment portfolios," Hoffman stated in an interview. He drew a parallel to the evolution of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), suggesting that onchain finance could achieve similar market penetration at an accelerated pace due to existing infrastructure.

Tokenization Gains Momentum

The hire coincides with a significant surge in interest and development surrounding asset tokenization on Wall Street and within crypto markets. This technology allows for the creation of blockchain-based representations of traditional assets, promising benefits like faster settlement times and continuous market access.

Major financial institutions, including BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, Fidelity, and JPMorgan, are actively exploring or have launched their own tokenized products. The market for tokenized assets has seen dramatic growth, nearly tripling in value over the past year to exceed $30 billion. Projections from Citi suggest tokenized assets could reach $5.5 trillion by 2030, with a joint report from Boston Consulting Group and Ripple estimating a potential market size of $18.9 trillion by 2033.

Ondo's Track Record

Ondo Finance has already established a presence in the tokenized asset space with its popular U.S. Treasury token (OUSG) and yield-bearing product (USDY). The company has also expanded into tokenized equities through Ondo Global Markets, reportedly holding over $1 billion in total value locked across more than 250 stocks and ETFs.
