Odisha Launches Free Mutual Fund Training in 97 Colleges

The Odisha government is introducing a free 30-hour mutual fund certification course for commerce and management students across 97 colleges. This partnership with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) aims to improve student employability and financial literacy by preparing them for professional NISM certifications.

The Odisha Higher Education Department is rolling out a free mutual fund certification program designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements. This initiative, which spans 30 hours of instruction, is open to students currently enrolled in commerce and management streams, including BCom, BBA, BMS, MBA, and MCom programs. By targeting students in 97 colleges, the state aims to build a pipeline of skilled professionals for the Indian financial services sector.

Access and Regional Reach

To ensure broad participation, the program is being implemented in institutions located near major urban centers across the state. Key locations include Bhubaneswar, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Berhampur, and several other districts. Each participating college will select approximately 60 students to undergo the training at no cost, focusing on providing practical knowledge alongside their standard university curriculum.

Industry Partnership and Skill Development

The initiative is supported by a Memorandum of Understanding signed in May 2026 between the Odisha Higher Education Department and the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The collaboration focuses on enhancing financial awareness and professional skill sets among the youth. By aligning the curriculum with the requirements for the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) Series V-A Mutual Fund Distributors Certification, the state intends to give students a standardized industry qualification.

Career Impact and Financial Sector Integration

For students, completing this certification can be a first step toward building a career in financial services. Those who pass the NISM examination will be qualified to work as mutual fund distributors, financial advisors, or in various roles within stockbroking and insurance firms.

For investors and the broader market, this move signifies an effort to increase the depth of the financial workforce in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. As India’s mutual fund industry continues to expand, the demand for qualified and regulated distributors has risen. By training students at the collegiate level, the initiative addresses the long-term need for a larger pool of professionals who can manage retail client relationships and promote formal investment culture. The next steps for the program will involve tracking student enrollment rates and their eventual performance in the NISM certification exams, which will serve as a measure of the course's effectiveness in preparing graduates for the job market.
