Nuvoco Vistas Unit NU Vista Gets ₹15.41 Crore GST Notice

NU Vista, a subsidiary of Nuvoco Vistas Corporation, has received a ₹15.41 crore tax notice regarding input credit claims for the 2021-2024 period. The company states it is prepared to contest the notice and does not expect a significant financial impact. Investors may monitor the upcoming adjudication process for further updates.

NU Vista Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nuvoco Vistas Corporation Limited, has disclosed that it received a Show Cause Notice (SCN) from the Joint Commissioner of the CGST Durgapur Audit Commissionerate in West Bengal. The regulatory notice demands payment of ₹15.41 crore, alleging irregularities in the company’s tax filings over a four-year period from the 2020-21 fiscal year through 2023-24.

Details of the Dispute

The tax authorities have questioned the company's application of Input Tax Credit (ITC), which is a mechanism used by businesses to reduce their tax liability by claiming credit for taxes paid on inputs. According to the notice, the authorities have flagged specific expenditures, including costs related to civil construction, toll charges, and canteen services, for which the company had claimed input credit. Additionally, the dispute covers how the firm adjusted its output tax liability when dealing with credit notes issued for sales returns and post-sale discounts.

Company Stance and Outlook

In an official filing with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE, the company stated that it maintains a strong position regarding the disputed claims. Management asserted that the firm possesses all necessary documentation and evidence to support its tax filings. Based on this, the company indicated that it does not anticipate any significant financial repercussions from this notice.

Investor Perspective

For investors in the cement sector, receiving tax notices related to GST compliance is an administrative matter that can occasionally lead to lengthy proceedings. While the company has downplayed the immediate financial risk, these situations often require a dedicated commitment of management time and legal resources as the case moves through the adjudication process with the tax authorities. The primary monitorable for shareholders is whether the company successfully resolves the dispute through the standard administrative appeal process or if the matter escalates into more complex litigation. Investors should track future quarterly filings for any updates on the status of this adjudication.
