Nifty Hits 22,997 as Reliance and IT Stocks Lead Rally

The Nifty 50 index rose 1.66% to 22,997, driven by strength in Reliance Industries and IT majors despite broader market weakness. Reliance shares gained 3.44% following the filing of its Jio Platforms IPO prospectus, while Nestle India shares fell 7.76% amid investor concerns regarding inflation and future profit margins.

The Nifty 50 index finished trading on Thursday at 22,997.35, marking its strongest single-day performance since June 12. While the index gained 1.66%, this momentum was largely concentrated in a handful of large-cap stocks. In contrast, the broader market showed signs of weakness, with midcap and smallcap indices closing lower. This gap suggests that investors are currently favoring larger, more established companies as they navigate turbulent global sentiments and uncertain economic signals.

Reliance Industries emerged as the standout performer of the day, with its share price rising 3.44% to ₹1,215. This positive movement followed the company's filing of the red herring prospectus for the Jio Platforms initial public offering, which is set to take place on October 21. The announcement has re-energized buying interest, helping the Nifty index break past the 22,500 resistance level. For investors, this event represents a significant step in the company's capital allocation strategy, shifting market focus toward its digital service assets.

The Information Technology sector also displayed resilience, climbing 1.82% during the session. This is particularly notable given that tech stocks across other parts of Asia, including major players in South Korea, faced significant selling pressure. Tata Consultancy Services played a key role in supporting these gains. Optimism surrounding demand for artificial intelligence, along with steady requirements from banking and manufacturing clients, continues to provide a floor for sector valuations. However, investors often remain cautious, watching for signs of profit-taking if international volatility persists.

Meanwhile, the FMCG sector faced a sharp decline, with the sectoral index dropping 1.06%. This was largely driven by a 7.76% fall in Nestle India shares following the release of its quarterly results. Although the company reported growth in sales volumes, investor sentiment turned negative due to management commentary on food inflation. The market is concerned that these rising input costs may pressure profit margins in the coming quarters, leading to a swift sell-off in the stock.

Global macroeconomic factors remain a source of concern for many. Overnight declines in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, fueled by persistent inflation data in the United States, have added pressure to global markets. Additionally, crude oil prices staying above $100 per barrel remain a drag on the broader economic narrative. Despite these challenges, the Indian rupee has shown stability, recording its fifth consecutive day of gains against the dollar. Investors may continue to track whether the current preference for large-cap stocks holds steady and how domestic companies manage their profit margins amidst ongoing global energy and inflation pressures.
