NPS Withdrawals Now Settled In Two Days, Says Axis Pension Fund CEO

National Pension System (NPS) withdrawals are now settled within two business days via a fully digital process. Axis Pension Fund CEO Sumit Shukla noted that this paperless shift removes traditional documentation requirements, streamlining the retirement fund exit for subscribers. Full withdrawals are now available for account balances under ₹8 lakh.

The National Pension System (NPS) has significantly reduced its withdrawal timeline, with settlements now processed within two business days. Sumit Shukla, CEO of Axis Pension Fund, confirmed that the transition to a completely digital, paperless system has removed the operational friction that often hampered retirement savings withdrawals in the past.

This shift to a T+2 (trade plus two days) settlement cycle allows subscribers to access their retirement funds quickly without the need for submitting physical paperwork. By integrating digital infrastructure, the system aims to provide a smoother experience compared to some traditional retirement schemes, where claims for partial or full settlement can sometimes take longer due to manual verification processes.

For subscribers with smaller retirement corpuses, the process has become even more accessible. Individuals with account balances below ₹8 lakh are now eligible for full withdrawal, a move designed to simplify the exit process for those with smaller savings.

While the operational speed of the withdrawal process has improved, investors should remain aware of the fundamental nature of NPS investments. Unlike fixed-deposit-style savings products, NPS is a market-linked retirement vehicle. The funds contributed by subscribers are invested across various asset classes, including government securities, corporate bonds, and equities. Consequently, the final value of the corpus at the time of withdrawal is subject to market performance. While the settlement process itself is fast, the actual amount received depends on the performance of the chosen investment schemes over the holding period.

Axis Pension Fund, which operates as an independent entity under the regulatory framework of the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), is currently focusing on reducing the time required for account onboarding as well. The firm aims to shorten the time taken to open new accounts, further encouraging broader participation in long-term pension planning.

Looking ahead, the efficiency of these digital systems remains a key monitorable for subscribers. While the current focus is on speed and ease of access, the long-term benefit for investors will continue to depend on consistent contributions and the performance of the underlying market-linked assets. Subscribers may track further announcements regarding simplified exit options and any potential changes to annuity rules from the regulator.
