NPCI Launches New Tech Subsidiary NTSL for AI and Blockchain

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has set up NPCI Tech Solutions Limited (NTSL) as a wholly owned subsidiary to focus on AI, blockchain, and digital infrastructure. This entity will manage key projects like eKYC Setu and transit ticketing systems. Investors should note that NPCI and its new subsidiary are unlisted and not available for trading on stock exchanges, which helps distinguish them from similar-sounding listed companies.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has launched its fourth wholly owned subsidiary, NPCI Tech Solutions Limited (NTSL). This new entity aims to centralize the organization's research and development efforts in emerging technologies, specifically artificial intelligence, blockchain, and advanced digital financial infrastructure. The move follows regulatory approval and marks a shift in how the payment giant plans to manage its growing technical operations.

Vishal Kanvaty, who has served as the Chief Technology Officer at NPCI, has been appointed as the Managing Director and CEO of NTSL. The subsidiary is designed to operate as an innovation hub, focusing on technical platforms and Global Capability Centre services. NTSL will take direct responsibility for maintaining and evolving key systems, including the eKYC Setu—which allows regulated entities to perform Aadhaar-based verification without storing sensitive data—and the Unified Ticketing Platform. The latter is currently being tested for transit and monument ticketing through Bharat Connect.

It is important for market observers to understand the corporate structure of this launch. NPCI and its subsidiaries are unlisted, not-for-profit entities governed by the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banks' Association. They are not traded on the National Stock Exchange or the Bombay Stock Exchange. Investors should be careful not to confuse NTSL with similarly named publicly traded companies, such as Network People Services Technologies, which operate as independent, profit-seeking firms with no ownership link to the NPCI group.

This structural evolution is part of a broader trend at NPCI to hive off specific business functions into specialized, focused companies. Previous examples of this strategy include the establishment of NPCI International Payments Limited and NPCI Bharat BillPay Limited. By separating these units, the organization intends to scale its capabilities to manage the massive and rising transaction volumes processed via the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

While the initiative is designed to drive efficiency, the company faces inherent challenges in this expansion. Operating as a critical component of India’s digital public infrastructure requires constant investment in system stability and security. Developing platforms based on AI and blockchain involves technical integration risks, including the potential for implementation delays. Furthermore, as NTSL scales its operations, it must maintain strict regulatory compliance to safeguard user data, a task that becomes increasingly complex as the volume of high-frequency digital financial services continues to grow.
